Ubuntu 11.10 is diabolical! I have downgraded to 11.04 for my main machine. I have a 2nd machine which will only run XBMC. It has an Audiophile soundcard which Pulse does not like. Which distro (and version) would be best to try please? PC is quite a good spec with 4Gbt ram.

thumbs up on the slaxbmc. build it from source would definitely make
it more geared toward the machine it is going to be installed on
compared to the ubuntu based setup. might have to give it a go myself.
thanks..
Thanks guys. I will try both of them.

Slackware works really well. I run it on my desktop with a HDMI connection to an LCD TV (xbmc) and LED monitor. Got Lubuntu 11.10 on my HTPC as I got the remote working on it.

I used this http://slackbuilds.org/repository/13.37/...edia/xbmc/ and modified the slackbuild to use xbmc 10.1. Get source from here http://mirrors.xbmc.org/releases/source/
You can use sbopkg http://sbopkg.org/ to download / install the required dependencies then manually install xbmc.
I would also install libbluray before xbmc http://pkgs.org/slackware-13.37/slacky-x...l.txz.html remember dependencies for libbluray as well.
Follow this guide to upgrade the kernel if needed http://alien.slackbook.org/dokuwiki/doku...elbuilding

If installing lirc, files are in '/etc' not '/etc/lirc'
Once I've sorted out my remote with slackware it's going on my htpc.
