I've tried searching for others with a similar problem but I'm coming up empty. The first movie I watched after upgrading from RC2 to RC3 suddenly had subtitles on all scenes when the same movie never exhibited that behavior before. I checked the subtitle option while the movie was playing and it was set to "None". I then went into the audio menu and found that "Enable Subtitles" was unchecked. I toggled it on and off but it made zero difference.

Giving up, I reinstalled RC2 over RC3 and the subtitles went away, but could still be manually enabled in the audio menu. Because of this I simply stuck with RC2 until the release version. However, I find the issue present in the 12.0 release and still I see nobody else talking about it. I can reproduce the issue in two separate MKV files with embedded (Not hardcoded) subtitles. Both of these movies were watched on RC2 and prior and neither had the problem, but with RC3 or the release version I simply cannot disable the subtitles. Pressing "T" makes the prompt appear, going between English and Disabled, but no actual change occurs.

Thanks for any help in advance. I'm sure I'm just overlooking something stupidly simple but it's beyond me at this point.

Can you run MediaInfo (wiki) on one of the MKVs that has this issue?

There were some changes done for displaying PGS forced subs without the subtitles option having to be enabled I believe. Check the files with mvkmerge to see to see what the subtitle settings are in the mkv's.

You are definately not stupis and have the same problem and trying to find where the problem with no luck lets see if there is anybody outhere that can help us.

Here is the output from MediaInfo on one of the files I'm having trouble with. I notice that both of the subtitle fields state "Forced: No" and while French is the default XBMC is intelligently picking English automatically due to my preferred region setting.

I just installed 12.0 Release on another computer in the house with no prior configuration/add-ons, etc. All I did upon starting XBMC the first time was add the movie directory and start an offending movie with no further adjustments. Subtitles were displayed in every scene. I went into the audio menu and disabled them, but still received subtitles. Pressing T toggles between languages and disabled, but still I always get subtitles.

To me this at least rules out the computer, the XBMC configuration file (my Windows XBMC install has a fairly complicated configuration, so I had to rule that out) and the add-ons.

Might be worth grabbing a debug log while you are playing one of these files and attempting to disable subs.

EDIT: Here's a full debug off of a fresh install with nothing done on the prior boot but set up the video directory and enable debugging. I then shut down, restarted, tried to disable subtitles with the T key and by using the audio menu, then shut down.

I've tried the test files in MPC-HC and VLC and neither have the same problem in their current releases, even on the same computers. They both default to subs on, but they can just as easily be disabled, just like they can on 12.0 RC2 and earlier. I'm running out of ideas!

Download MKVToolNix and load your mkv into it and change both the subtitles from default to off or no and then save it as a new mkv.

It does not compress or anything it just lets u alter mkv setting then have a look at media info and make sure the subtitles are set to no or off and then play it back it should not display any subtitles when playing back.


The only time you use forced is if its an English audio track and has English subtitles at certain parts of the film.

I never use default on my subtitles just off as if I want them on I turn them on in xbmc and select the ones I want.

This is really, really good info, and if push comes to shove it may be what I have to do to all of my movies, but that's what I'd like to avoid-- removing all subs out of all of my movies. I've shown in my previous posts that I've checked that the subs are not set to forced in the MKV, and the problem only happens in RC3 and release editions of 12.0, none prior, and not in any other media player. It just feels like a band-aid solution to a problem. A problem that very well may be on my end, but a problem none-the-less.

Thanks for recommendation for a tool like that, though. It could be very handy when working with bad MKVs!

@Mister Negative - with Meridius band-aid solution your not removing anything, merely changing the switch from 'default' to 'off', which in the grand scheme of things should stop the majority of players displaying them, even if their own global on/off switch isn't working.

There is a small java app called JMkvpropedit which does batch conversions from a gui, so you can amend all your files in one go. I must admit this is not a situation I have seen, even with files marked as 'default' providing they have been switched to off in the GUI and set as default for all movies.

Might want to use pastebin to display all your log file and then post a link to it here. Most devs will need the full log and posting partial logs doesn't help them.

Thanks for the insight. A batch job would at least make the situation less painless. It just troubles me that these files are not set to forced subtitles and changing all subtitle defaults to "No" using that program doesn't fix it, which pretty much means that I have to remove the ability to display subtitles at all, forever, in any program by stripping them out of the MKV in order to fix this. That means no displaying subtitles late at night, no subtitles on movies with foreign languages, or any other number of situations that seem unreasonable. This can't seem proper, can it? Certainly something is wrong, be it on my end or in the programming. Something changed between RC2 and 3 that is having unintended consequences in my scenario.

I did post a full debug session via Pastebin. It's in an edited post with a partial log displaying as well.

Is there a reason why you are using RC3 and not 12.0 Stable release - might be worth trying that to see if it changes anything.

Yes, I have tried the release version (it's in the thread title). When it happened in RC3 I rolled back to RC2 figuring it was just a bug, but when 12.0 release contained the same issue I decided to post about it.
