okay the beginning of my post got cut off.

I am trying to get xbmc running on an apple tv
Good up until I try to startx. I get a flash of green then nothing and I have to reboot.
I am using component output to a projector this setup works fine with appletv.

See above post for xorg log and config file.

Any more info needed to help me out let me know.

dump all those modelines, they are useless. and cause nothing but trouble.

Basically you want to force it into component using a valid component setting (ie Option "TVStandard" "HD480i"). And not let the nvidia binary try an figure out a setting that might work
Is anyone using XBMC LiveUSB with an Asus p5e-vm hdmi using the onboard Intel G35 graphics? I haven't had much success in getting it to run. I get a black screen on
HDMI.
Hey I reported my success elsewhere but also wanted to report it in this thread with a couple notes specific to the LiveUSB install. My configuration below is working flawlessly. Boots up in about 45 seconds, like everyone else. Digital audio not yet tested but that does not seem like a very big hurdle.

With respect to the LiveUSB, once booting up I had to CTRL-ALT-F2 to get a bash prompt and setup networking and LIRC. Networking is pretty easy (despite having to use vi to make the edits, which I do not use too often so it was a little cumbersome). LIRC was not really too hard either, I just copied my conf file contents from my HDD-based Ubuntu install and was good to go.

I did note one thing that I haven't seen reported on the board yet (apologies if it has been) -- every once in a while, my networking will not start correctly. A reboot fixes it. When I go into "System Information" and down to networking, it says I am connected, lists an IP address, etc., but next to Internet, instead of "connected", it says "Busy". I am not sure what is causing that?

Now I am off to get the touchscreen working. Once that is finished, I will be able to set this bad boy up in my theater! (FINALLY)

FWIW, my configuration below played the Killa Sample without any noticable dropped frames.

FWIW, I had the same issues with my P5E-VM HDMI. There are quite a few issues with the Intel driver that shipped with Hardy, and blank screens and general flakiness seems to be common. Version 2.3 (which will ship with Intrepid Ibex) will hopefully behave a little better. After trying several different install methods (Hardy Server with rrambo xinit scripts, Xubuntu, etc, etc), I settled on working with a regular Ubuntu install, and then started stripping it from there, I whacked a lot of useless crap out of /etc/rc2.d including the regular GDM startup script and now boot directly in to X and XBMC, I am pretty pleased with the boot times at this point. It was the only way I could get it to reliably boot and or reboot in to XBMC every time. I should also be able to strip out some more to make it even faster.

Please disregard my question noted above. I think I will just mount an external HDD and pull the file from that. If it works, my problem should be solved and I should have touchscreen functionality!

I do have another question, though. Probably a stupid one too! I installed openssh using apt-get, and when I tried to log in from another computer, it asked for username/password. I entered "xbmc" and "password" and it did not let me have access. Am I missing something? Huh

Whoever said there is no such thing as a stupid question is a stupid person, as my question above was definitely stupid -- I was not specifying the xbmc user when I connected via SSH so it was trying to log me in using the username of the computer I was using as a client. Duh.
For about two weeks, I have had XBMC LiveUSB running pretty well. Bird scene plays great, interface is smooth and everything just works (except for the sometimes wacky network connection that sometimes requires a reboot -- see my July 19 post above). However, setting up this darn touchscreen has been my undoing.

In order to make sure I am doing things right, I have done everything in parallel -- once using a full Ubuntu 8.04 (Gnome) install and then in XBMC LiveUSB. This enabled me to get LIRC working well with my MCE remote, etc. But even this method failed me with the touchscreen. The touchscreen is 100% working in the full Ubuntu install, but I have had absolutely no success using XBMC LiveUSB.

I am not sure anyone here has tried to do what I am doing, though I would think that people with iMon touchscreens would come across the same problems, unless they just "work" in Ubuntu.

First, I downloaded the eGalax TouchKit drivers. I tested using the v2.03 beta, but will try with v1.07 and v1.08 next. v1.07 is the version that shipped with the monitor but I figured that it would be better to go with the current version.

Next, I ran the install script, which moves the driver file to the appropriate Xorg directory, auto-modifies xorg.conf and installs the configuration tools. I double-checked the xorg.conf modifications and they all seem to make sense to me. Heck, I even took the USB mouse and keyboard out of the equation and hooked up an old PS/2 keyboard.

Calibration is where I run into trouble. In the full Ubuntu install, you have two choices -- a control panel-style configuration tool and a command-line tool. They both operate to execute a few different calibration tools (4-point, drawing, etc.). They work great in Ubuntu and after about 30 seconds, you have a working touchscreen.

Then I move to XBMC LiveUSB. Not surprisingly, the control panel-style tool will not work because there is no window manager. I thought this would be no big deal because eGalax includes the command line tools. However, when I execute the command line tool, it tells me that no compliant touchscreen was found and that I need to make sure X is installed. Obviously, X is installed. I am also pretty sure (95% at least), that I am identifying the correct port for the touchscreen (/dev/usb/hiddev0, the same as in full-blown Ubuntu). You are not even supposed to have to enter in the port, as the auto-config just references "usbauto" (as opposed to the actual port, it is supposed to auto-identify). Neither "usbauto" nor the specific port identification seemed to solve the problem.

After troubleshooting (trying different ports, device names, etc.), I think that where the problem must lie is with the inbuilt kernel modules, which according to the poorly written manual that comes with the TouchKit driver, conflict with the TouchKit driver. I have no idea how to get around this (they are already blacklisted), so I am thinking I will have to abandon XBMC LiveUSB and go with a full HDD install (probably using Xubuntu or a command-line only install).

The frustrating part is that these two scenarios are on the same machine yet yield different results. It must be something to do with the specific linux install used in XBMC LiveUSB. I know that XBMC LiveUSB is based on the server edition of Ubuntu, which as far as I can tell may use a modified kernel. If this is the case, then I think I need to re-start from scratch.

If anyone has any ideas or a similar setup and is will to help me troubleshoot this, I would be thrilled. I tend to only have times to tinker with this on the weekends, and I am not a Linux expert (though I do not think of myself as a noob), but I am willing to try anything (at worst, I just reinstall the system to my USB stick and start over -- which I have done twice already).
