i think this is very strange. why isn't it possible? (i have searched the forum, but cannot find a reason, nor any previous posts about this.) on my dreambox the samba server package is only 329 kb, which we could probably strip further. if memory is an issue, we could have an option to disable ftp and only run smb.

it's not impossible at all.

you are free to implement it

why not use the ftp to network brigde?
it is sofware that does this availeble that makes a ftp drive look like a network disc.
i think i read about it on the evox site.

well, that package is not running in normal ms os we are, but in linux. the problem is that samba creates new processes for each connection and ms os only support 1 process totally. ie, a pain to figure out how to port.

it would be good if i could access files on the xbox through samba from my computer, without having to ftp the whole file to the computer.

- kraqh3d - 2005-03-13

yes it would be nice, but its not possible. the xbox is only a samba client, not server. see this thread for more information:

hello everybody
i make lot of wonderfull things with your great work !!
but i always wonder why i can't stream the folders files (music, pictures, video,...) from any device connected to the xbox by rj45 or better wifi. i can find the folder of my xbox on my pocket pc connected by wifi, i can copy, paste everything but never stream.
i think it's a question for the developers or may be i'm stupid.
any idea ?
thanks

in others words can i read files stored on the xbox hard drive from a pc ?

- Hullebulle - 2005-05-01

you can't cause there is no samba server for the xbox and ftp don't allow you to stream.

only solution in know of is webdrive which kinda emulates samba access via ftp (but isn't perfect).

hi to all__--
running the new 050205 build- works great love the new features and getting use to the new feel. just got another xbox, one with a huge hd and a database of movies on it and one with a smaller 100g drive and would like to stream media to and from. i also have to 2 pcs with samba sharing music and video from them to the both xboxes, but cant seem to get the xboxes to talk to eachother.

and does any editors still work with xbmc rather than doing it manually.

any thing that points me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated

you cant stream from one xbox to another.

- LDocherty - 2005-05-09

this may be way off but i only need part functionality for what i'm doing. i need to rip audio cd's to my server - i've just been told i can't do this. i also (after many pages reading the same question Smile) now know that you can't run an smb share on an xbox - only the client. but - when looking in th wiki manual i found something sort of related to my needs - junctions

see this - http://manual.xboxmediacenter.de/wakka.p....&v=19xs

if i could run this on the xbox and point my cdda rip path to this - which had a symbolic (or hard) link to another hard drive then wouldn't that work? if that worked it would be a bit complicated but would do what many other folk need too.

of course this may be even more impossible than running an smb server on the xbox Smile - any thoughts?

- kraqh3d - 2005-05-09

you cant run junction on the xbox. are you sure you cant set your cd rip location to a smb:// url? support for writeable shares was added.

i really dont understand why anyone would want to rip cd's from their xbox. do it on your computer. it'll be faster, and you have more encoding options.

- LDocherty - 2005-05-09

ripping movies and audio on a pc is easy and faster - correct - but i can't train my wife to do this - (she wouldn't and couldn't be interested if she tried - she "has a life"  as she puts it Smile). however, she will use the remote control to do it. i too would find it easier and i'm not in that much of a hurry.

so you see - not all reasoning is for better technology Smile

@LDocherty, you're off-topic in this thread (as it is not a request for what you are after, only relation is the smb-protocol), you want this (link) :hmm:
