Man. What's with all the mascots eating popcorn? And why does the popcorn tub always seem to look the same?

What makes a good mascot - roguesailor - 2011-05-17 10:11

I had a few thoughts on what makes a good /memorable mascot

1)It is directly identifiable and related to the product/service etc that it is promoting (think Mr. Clean, Star-Kist Tuna)

2)Being relatively bland as a base allows for great expressiveness, making it possible to craft and change the mascots' personality (think the Michelin Man, Pillsbury Doughboy, Kool Aid, the giant M&M etc.)

3)Often the best mascots are inanimate objects brought to life (think all those previously mentioned aside from Mr. Clean, as well as many I'm sure you can think of)

With these thoughts in mind I decided to use a filmstrip as a base for an XBMC mascot. The thought was that XBMC, being a media frontend, is directly linked to film/movies, a filmstrip is a fairly nondescript base with the potential for great expressiveness, and it's a normally inanimate object.

Unfortunately my graphic design abilities are just a few levels above 'stick figure', so I don't know if I've done the idea justice, but here is my attempt. I can work on cleaning it up and giving it some personality if it draws interest.

BTW, I used inkscape for this, so it is an easily scalable vector image.

Great ideas everyone!
