Is it possible to stream to an iPhone? - bisk - 2011-05-03

What I'm looking for is similar functionality to that of Air Video or StreamToMe, but with the functionality to take advantage of my XBMC Database at home while I'm at work or out and about. For those that don't know, Air Video and StreamToMe transcode the video from a PC that I have at home running the respective server software and then I use my iPhone to connect. I'm running XBMC on both Windows and atv2, but I'm assuming that Windows will be my only viable option (as long as something exists) as I don't see the atv2 having enough juice to accomplish this.

Air Video works great, I have on my ipad for when I'm home and can't decide between a movie or a show or to watch the Phillies game. This way I can have both. Streams great via home wifi, never buffers after the initial load. Also have on my iphone for slow days at work, works just as well on 3g as it does wifi. I have yet to encounter a streaming issue while transcoding. Application is worth every penny.

Thanks for the reply. I've tried both Air Video and StreamToMe and both worked perfectly and I was quite impressed with the quality. The reason I was hoping for an XBMC equivalent was so that I could take advantage of my XBMC database for marking TV episodes and movies as watched and for the playstate so that i can continue watching when I get home.

XBMC doesn't transcode, though it works well as a uPnP source provided the video format is one the iPhone can play.

What jhsrennie said and the normal webserver can serve plain files just fine as well (I have streamed from it many times). We do want to add transcoding support to it also (something the uPnP server could use even), when we have transcoding we could have html5 webinterfaces or even apps which get transcoded data just fine.

Patches for transcoding support would be much appreciated.

Cheers,
Tobias

Hi

I've made this little script based on ffmpeg and segmenter:

http://www.istreamdev.com

Originaly it's made to stream TV live streams and recording from VDR to your iphone/ipad. But it gives mp3 and video on the fly transcoding too.

It was in my todolist to integrate json xbmc api on it directly to use xbmc databse. Not started yet and really don't have the time for the moment.

But all the script and soft used on it are gpl and open source so feel free to modify it.

It works really well. It uses apple segmented HTTP live streaming protocol.

Would this app do the job? http://streamer.collect3.com.au/ oops I see you are looking to stream videos rather than music.

I'd give Subsonic Music Server a try if I was you, it now supports video, transcodes the files and also has some very good apps (iSub is a particular favourite).

Edit: Nice to hear that the XBMC developers are considering transcoding as a future feature, maybe there is an opportunity to team up with the Subsonic developer since it already has a very nice API.

Iphone? Streaming?

That would be great, but I'm not using Plex or a Mac.

What I'm looking for is something similar to what Boxee is offering now - http://9to5mac.com/2011/08/09/boxee-releases-ipad-app-that-features-mac-to-ipad-video-streaming/

It seems to be only doing WiFi streaming but I know that 3G is possible as I'm doing it with Air Video and Stream to Me, but would love to be able to use XMBC for database management.

No one suggested installing XBMC itself on the iPhone? o.O Really?

The iPhone 4 and 3GS have the same power as the ATV2. Jezz's touch skin is very usable on an iPhone. I use XBMC on my iPhone 4 all the time.

Just to be clear, you need to be jailbroken.

On a side note, does any body know if xbmc on the iphone has a "tv out" option when streaming? Plex has this and makes the iphone a nice wiresless streamer to tv.

having an iPhone and not jailbreaking it? I.. I don't understand...

As for TV out, XBMC for iOS does not support the native video out APIs yet. You can mirror the display, but it's at non "Retina" resolution (another feature waiting to happen, but it might be a while since most people will use XBMC on an ATV2 and iPad over an iPhone). I'll be honest... it's not pretty. But give it time; there's a lot of various work to be done and only so many hours in the day. Given that A5 SoC iOS devices can output 1080 (iPhone 4 with the A4 can do 720), I'm sure we'll see native video output added sometime in the near future.

Once it happens it will be basically a portable ATV2 that one has on them all the time. It will be very awesome.

I know. Shame on me. But there really hasnt been anything for me to justify bothering jailbreaking. I was thinking about doing it for xbmc but your review of it nixed that idea. Smile

I've got XBMC installed on my iPad 2 and it's working great. But what I'm looking for is the ablility to watch my movies while I'm not at home. I would like to be able to use my PC at home to transcode the video to a 3G friendly bitrate to stream to my iPhone or iPad.

Maybe now that Boxee has their app someone will be kind enough to hook us XBMC users up too Big Grin

This is exactly what I was referring to - http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=105883&highlight=subsonic
