How about something inbetween. Either of these suitable?

i just read about it.

What problems have been reported with the HD6450?

Thanks

first link seems to fit, but i didn't find any reports from user trying it with this card, so maybe you are the first one ;o) please let us know Smile

second link looks like the heatsink is too big for the microserver...

@g725s:

i haven't written that there are problems with the HD6450. i have meant that there might be problems with the HD6670 cause of its higher power consumption... ;o)

Just to let yourself and other user know, the 'Sapphire 11191-02-20G HD 6570 2GB DDR3 Graphics Card' works a treat!

All running reasonably quietly, havent had it set up for long, just over an hour. Downloaded the driver finder software from the AMD website, ran it, restarted, and after making a few simple adjustments in XBMC & WHS (to switch on the audio, and set the overscan to 0, default was -15 for some reason) I have HD audio & seemingly perfectly smooth, judder free playback!

Thanks for the Help QLink!

Ok maybe someone can help with a problem I'm having with a new video card I just installed in my N40L. Keep in mind that this N40L runs under WHS 2011. And the two graphics cards I'm about to mention, I am pretty sure that the only different between these two cards is the amount of memory.

Originally I had an MSI R6450-MD2GD3/LP ( http://us.msi.com/product/vga/R6450-MD2GD3-LP.html ) in my N40L without problem and was using XBMC to play to an HDTV. It played all the mkv files I tried. Then I retired the N40L from its XBMC HTPC duties putting this card in another and much better dedicated HTPC running Windows 7.

However recently I needed a DVI output on my N40L so I installed an MSI R6450-MD1GD3/LP ( http://us.msi.com/product/vga/R6450-MD1GD3-LP.html ) but right off seemed to have some problems. I was getting a Warning pop-up that stated: " The AMD VISION Engine Control Center is not supported by the driver version of your enabled graphics adapter. Please update your AMD graphics driver, or enable your AMD adapter using the Displays Manager " Also the Control Center was freezing if used.

To remedy the pop-up I uninstalled the Control Center leaving just the video and HDMI audio driver and the pop-up's seem to have gone away.

But I was curious as to how the video playback was with this new 1gb memory card. So I tried a few mkv files and what happens with all of them is that they play perfectly for about 8 seconds and then the video just freezes.

Any ideas?

Here is the link to both cards: http://us.msi.com/product/vga/#?fp=Radeon%20HD%206000%20Series&sk=Radeon%20HD%206450 They are the only two HD 6450 cards that MSI sells.

Great thread thank you for sharing....

As for a 6450 GPU that work's really nice is this XFX HD-645X-ZQH2 Radeon HD 6450 1GB

It comes with a low profile bracket if needed....

I have tested other fan less cards and this one wins....

The temps stay at a low 35-40c and stressed it can go to 45-48C

This is where I became a XFX fan.

Silent baby..... Big Grin This card is my top choice for HTPC if needed....

Hi All,

Just setting up XBMC on my N40L (running WHS2011), i have upgraded RAM to 8gb and installed the ASUS HD6450 card but i appear to be having playback issues in XBMC, it stalls every 7-10 seconds on the avi file i just tried which is saved locally Huh

the driver was installed as administrator and was taken from the ASUS website here

http://www.asus.com/Graphics_Cards/AMD_Series/EAH6450_SILENTDI512MD3LP/#download

(Version 8.861) for windows 7 (64bit)

but i haven't installed the ASUS Smart Doctor version 5.80 as i wasnt sure i needed it?

Anything else i can try? I haven;t yet tried HD yet as i wanted to get the simple files sorted first.

thanks

RE: Introducing my HP Microserver N36L using WHS2011 + XBMC - QLink - 2012-12-23

sounds like a driver problem...

maybe you should try the newest AMD Catalyst driver here and see of it works...

be sure that dxva2 is enabled in xbmc settings and all the other video options are set up correctly...

Thanks QLink. All sorted. turns out a system restart and turning the audio on the card and it is all working. Played a few test HD videos and it all looks stunning. Now to set up Sickbeard etc. Thanks again for your help!

Install Microsoft Security Essentials on WHS 2011 and SBS2011E - g725s - 2012-12-26

Here is a good Christmas present for those running WHS 2011 and would like it running the free Microsoft Security Essentials ( MSE )...

Download and Copy the mseinstall.exe (x64 version) file to a new folder on your WHS 2011 desktop

Highlight that folder and press Shift while Right Clicking this folder you placed the mseinstall.exe installer in. Select "Open Command Window Here" to bring up a command prompt which will have automatically opened at the appropriate directory and type...

mseinstall /disableoslimit

Reported to work on SBS2011E also

Is there a definitive list of graphics cards which fit into the server? I have bought one for my little brother who will be running xnmcbuntu so ideally after a recommendation for a passive (or quiet) nvidea card.

Thanks

HI Guys

New to this and hopefully find the advice I need here.

I have a new N36L which is lying in the box gathering dust, so decided to make it into a xbmc centre.

It has the original 1GB mem and 250GB HDD.

So question is -

1. Do I need more mem and how much?

2. Do I need a graphics card and if so - £25-40 budget

3. OP - do I need to get WHS or WS 08 onwards etc?

4. (as above) will it be easier to use linux like mint?

Basically would like to set it up on the cheap.

It will be hooked up to a 50" plasma and Pioneer AV

I have xbmc on my laptop and was going to by a xbmc box to stick next to the TV, but found out that the HP microserver can be used as a xbmc center

Many thanks

Cheers

RE: Introducing my HP Microserver N36L using WHS2011 + XBMC - QLink - 2013-10-09

1. depends on what OS and what other functions you want to use your microsever for...

if you want to use windows, then you definitly need more RAM
if you want to use openelec for example, then 1GB RAM should be enough

2. yes you need a graphics card, cause the microsever has no soundcard and only onboard graphic with vga output,
a list for fitting gfx cards can be found here: http://n40l.wikia.com/wiki/Graphics_Cards but you have to check if it will work with your os too (openelec compatible etc.)

3. see 1.

4. never used mint

Just to let you guys know. I purchased a SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 5450, which fits great, but I was having minor video/audio stuttering for about 1-2 seconds every 10 minutes or so with 50-80% CPU usage. Even with video rendering on auto, it wouldn't work very well. When I switched it to force to DXVA, my CPU usage went down to 5-15% and the stuttering issue went away.
