These "servers",..especially as you add hard drives,...and not the noisiest systems,..but at the same time,..they're not quiet either. Fans also add to the noise factor. The more hard drives you add,..the more heat you generate, the more fans you'll need,..the noisier it all gets. Can you put this server in a closet or in a laundry room,..out of sight? RE: Looking to Build Your Very First unRAID Server? - doorunrun - 2012-10-06 Hello All, I've been running my first unRAID server for about a month or so and I'd like to add my comments. So far I'm very happy with it. I was able to assemble it with some leftover parts but wound up purchasing two 2TB drives, a Corsair CX500 PSU, CoolerMaster 5-in-3 cage along with some fans. BTW, those cages, and others like it are a "cool" way to utilize an existing case. The system started evolving pretty quickly and certainly you learn as you go. Lime-Technology's user forum offer a lot of good information. Once I got the basic system up and running I started studying their plug-in system. Once you start down that road, you'll probably find it's time to pony up and expand your system to include a cache drive and since this drive doesn't need to be very big it's not much of an additional expense other than paying to get your USB drive registered. Installing plug-in's is well documented; I use SabNZBd and SickBeard maintained by Influencer, who does an excellent job of support!! Also I have the APC plugin and use SimpleFeatures for web gui. I just don't think you should try to do everything at once. One of the nice aspects of this system is its flexibility. It pays to read over the unRAID forums and see some of the "horror" stories others have to tell. Just because you have a parity drive there's no guarantee you won't have a problem. I'm still in the "warm glow" days with my system. You have to realize this is a great cost effective system that is well designed, supported and can grow with your needs.....BUT....... It's probably not a bad idea to have some secondary backup available in your plans or closely monitor the health of your unRAID drives. Cheers! RE: Looking to Build Your Very First unRAID Server? - osirisjem - 2012-10-06 The unraid wiki suggests BIOSTAR A760G M2+ Micro ATX AMD Motherboard Hard to find one except on ebay. Any suggested alternatives ? Good advice, no matter what you choose as a redundancy plan. There's a good reason companies have fail-over servers off-site, use RAID, and backup the systems, AND also store the backups off-site. No plan is fail-proof. None! You can only minimize the risk. RE: Looking to Build Your Very First unRAID Server? - Songoku - 2012-10-09 Hi all; i dont want to open a new thread. I will be really happy if you can make a recommendation for me, My mobo is Asus M5A78L-M LX AMD 760G Socket AM3 1866MHz DDR3 PCI Express 2.0 mATX http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131795 I have 6 sata slots which are full at the moment. Can you please recommend me any pci&pcie card which is fast and useable with my mobo.I need 4 more sata slots. I have to order from newegg therefore it must be easy to find. thank you RE: Looking to Build Your Very First unRAID Server? - GortWillSaveUs - 2012-10-10 (2012-10-08, 16:52)GortWillSaveUs Wrote:(2012-10-06, 17:00)doorunrun Wrote: Just because you have a parity drive there's no guarantee you won't have a problem. I forgot to add another step that companies have in their redundancy plans: They test their backups frequently. Nothing like having 2 drives fail on your server that's running RAID5,....only to find out that your backups are not valid and can't be restored. Now I'm not suggesting that you need to unplug a drive every 6 months in your unRaid system to see if it really works,....but.. all the same,..you should understand how your system works if a hard drive fails. Practice and plan for a failure. I would highly suggest testing a drive failure at least once just so you're comfortable in knowing what and how things works. RE: Looking to Build Your Very First unRAID Server? - mccarneychris - 2012-10-17 Quick question, will unraid allow me to build it without formatting my exsisting hdd's? i currently had 4x2TB with existing data on them that i dont want to loose. Also if i were to set it up with the 4 drives can i add additional drives at a later date? RE: Looking to Build Your Very First unRAID Server? - mr.sparkle - 2012-10-17 No and yes. RE: Looking to Build Your Very First unRAID Server? - Valdysses - 2012-10-18 Do you need these ports to do anything special? Are these going to be used in an existing RAID array, or should they be RAID'ed themselves? Do you wasnt to be able to see them as 4 individual drives, or 1 big drive? Actually, no matter what your answer is, I think you should look at this card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816115029&name=Controllers-RAID-Cards That's a Pcie card, so you need to use your one pci express slot, but it works very well. I've used it in RAID5 for two years, and it's been flawless. You can also use it in JBOD and address the disks directly. This is probably a better buy: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816101358&name=Controllers-RAID-Cards If you use the second card, you'll need a SAS to SATA adapter cable, which is easy to get. Something like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816115064&name=Server-Accessories That's neat and clean, and still gives you room for another 4 drives. That's 14 total, which should hold you over for awhile Iyi sanslar, abi. I know you can stick it in the 2.0 x16 slot (it's where I have mine) .... but let's find out if 2 more will be ok on the pcie x1 slots... anyone? Making sure... But as Valdysses says the SUPERMICRO AOC-SASLP-MV8 it's a great card that will handle 8 more HD's... RE: Looking to Build Your Very First unRAID Server? - Dignam - 2012-10-23 Anyone have experience with the Western Digital WD AV-GP WD20EURS 2TB SATA 3.0Gb/s drives with UnRaid? Cant seem to find much info on them. RE: Looking to Build Your Very First unRAID Server? - outatouch0 - 2013-01-07 Question: why is it not better to start with a MB with more SATA plugs instead of one with 2-4 and then adding cards to the board. It looks like the 4 SATA plug card is $100 by itself. I don't undestand the benefit of this over starting with a MB with 6-8 SATA's on it instead? thanks RE: Looking to Build Your Very First unRAID Server? - psypher - 2013-01-30 (2012-10-18, 19:28)Beer40oz Wrote: You can also get some of this cards SATA2 Serial ATA II PCI-Express RAID Controller Card (Silicon Image SIL3132) As a long time unraid owner, I would not recommend getting a 2 port card. Trust me, you'll eventually run out of ports and need to replace it. I use these 4 port cards and they've been rock solid for several years. SYBA SY-PEX40008 Besides those, the Super Micro 8 port is also winner. |
