Plug n Play ambient light? - Kaitlyn2004 - 2011-08-07

I've seen various mentions and links to DIY ambient light solutions.

Is there any prepacked solution that I can just buy, stick behind the tv... plug in and be good to go?

Interesting question.. Im in for the answer as well. I would love Ambient light.

its probably not the answer your looking for but,
my brother's father-in-law controls the lights in his home-cinema room
using his IR Harmony Remote....

Yes... but I'd like the lights to be in sync with what is on the TV. I think thats exactly what Philips' Ambilight does? Have seem demos but they seemed super DIY/more technical...

I seen it. I personally don't like it. I like to watch a film in total darkness. I never seen a package that you can buy.

Is it? I did not know that.

yeah i like total darkness too Tongue

A comparison of some PC Ambilight systems

The "Philip Amb X" and "Ambient Reality Effects" are probably the most plug-&-playable solutions.

But i'm pretty sure that you will find someone to sell you an assembled version of the other systems if you google it or post a request on their project forums... may not be cheap though.

I have just used led-strips on the back of the TV. The colour is warm white and suits well without distractions. I can then have a dark room, but still "save my eyes" and find the remote.

If anyone is just looking for bias lighting, I recommend CinemaQuest Inc.

I have the Ideal-Lume Panelight behind a 50" Kuro and it's great. Bias lighting will reduce eyestrain considerably.

From what I gathered You want Bias Lighting to be at 65k otherwise it doesnt have such an effect. So what Midnight Watcher posted would be great and I am considering picking that up as well for my 47" Plasma..

IDK if other color lights have any effect or not I can just tell 65k lights are optimal for this use.

A little confused by the wording - so does the lighting adjust to what is on the TV or is it just a constant color?

Also, does the 2 light sources look weird? I'd ideally want a strip on each side of the TV I would think... more consistent "glow"

Constant color (6500K white). It also improves the perceived contrast ratio of your HDTV.

There is a Russian opensource project that made an ambylight analog for computer.

Maybe they could help you with it.
