Err, Amazon does produce content now. They just put out a series of pilots, there was a ton of publicity around it. Not that it contradicts the rest of what you're saying.

Just found this browser add-on: XBMC WebBrowser. It's only for Windows, but it lets you watch Prime videos. It may even be a fix for FreeCable!

You can do it effectively by simply using Advanced Launcher :

Even if Bluecop's addon was modified to do this, it wouldn't be a solution for many. Even with my brand new ATI-based HTPC hardware with all possible proprietary drivers and hardware acceleration enabled, Amazon's browser player is bogged down by the DRM. It plays at (I'd guess) 10-15 FPS, which gets really painful to watch after just a few minutes. On top of that, it's not HD, so it's either blurry or pixelated, depending on your Flash settings. This is not acceptable for me. It's gotta run natively in XBMC.

The recent video channel deprecation simply must be due to requirements of of the content producers and not Amazon itself which only stands to lose from these new restrictions. If Amazon can find a way to satisfy these producers while still supporting the prior range of re-distributers like XBMC and browsers (HD) it will almost certainly do so. If not, I really don't think that Amazon can be held accountable for the dictates of a paranoid content industry.

If this contradicts anything I might have said here before, that's because I've given the situation more thought.

What if amazon charges a fee to device manufacturers to connect to amazon prime? I don't know whether it does or doesn't, but amazon could then end up making more -- despite alienating folks like us -- through license fees and sales of proprietary hardware.

I wonder if this could work, navigating Amazon using the addon, and then changing the code so that when you hit Play it launches the web browser in full screen. As for FreeCable, some of the navigation is broken, and I(and I assume others) don't want to navigate a web page with a remote.

This is what i did as a temporary solution on my machine. Here are the files for my current configuration.

You will need to replace the playercorefactory.xml in your /usr/share/xbmc/system directory with the one given.

Pleast note this is for linux, with the assumption that firefox is installed at /usr/bin/firefox. It can easily be changed for any OS and browser though. Just place the playercorefactory.xml in the correct xbmc system directory for your OS and modify the line <filename>/usr/bin/firefox</filename> to point to your browser.

Also it works best if you dont already have firefox open in the background. Then when you close firefox it will return you to fullscreen xbmc.

I know its not a great solution since we are still having to use flash to play the SD movies, but it is at least easier than trying to navigate amazons website to find movies.

Here is the chat I just had with an Amazon Rep..
Quote:You are now connected to Sukanya from Amazon.com.
Me:The Amazon plug-in for XBMC stopped working.. all content now uses DRM so I am unable to watch it.
Sukanya:Hello Wipmonkey, my name is Sukanya. I'll be glad to help you today.
Me:Hi Sukanya, Thanks.
Sukanya:Recently Adobe has updated the flash since then Amazon instant videos are not compatible with XBMC.
Me:Is there a fix expected?
Sukanya:We're working on it with Adobe team and hope the issue will be fixed soon.
Me:Good to hear.. if there some way I can be contacted once it is fixed?
Sukanya:You can contact us again to know the details regarding this Wipmonkey.
Me:Okay, thanks for you time.
Sukanya:You're welcome Wipmonkey.

I changed my name for no good reason.

This isn't ideal, but it could be a decent band-aid until something better is worked out.

If there was a way to make it automatically open straight into the Flash player and fullscreen it, or to bypass Firefox altogether and just push the stream that Bluecop's player attempts to view straight into a fullscreen flash overlay, that'd be even better!

Now, does anyone have any ideas to help resolve this problem that keeps me from using Romans I XVI's mod?

My problem is that in fullscreen Flash (Flash 11.2), the movies play very choppy (varies between about 10-15fps, I'd guess -- very painful to watch after just a few minutes). However, they play smooth not fullscreen (but no one would seriously want to watch a movie that way).

Now, I was experimenting yesterday with Flash settings, and occasionally (and apparently at random), something different happened. Normally when I run the movie in fullscreen in Flash, the controls are huge, like the resolution of the whole player and not just the movie was changed to 480p. That's when it's choppy. But sometimes the controls stayed at 720p (native resolution of my TV), and the movie played perfectly smooth. But I've only gotten this to happen 3 times out of about 20 or more tries yesterday, and no setting appears to be responsible for it.

I tried contacting Amazon support to see if they could help me keep the player itself at 720p, thinking that since this is using an "officially sanctioned" method, they'd be more supportive. Nope. They just told me that Linux has never been an "approved device", and they couldn't assist me further in the matter. I think they're just avoiding helping me at this point because I keep hounding them about supporting XBMC. Wink

Does anyone have any idea how to make 720p in the Flash player happen everytime so that this solution is actually usable?

Thanks!

RE: [RELEASE] Amazon Prime Instant Video plug-in addon - bkimbel - 2013-05-02

HD video from browsers no longer supported: Streaming From Your Computer. See section under "Notes".

RE: [RELEASE] Amazon Prime Instant Video plug-in addon - mikefreeman - 2013-05-02

Update to my last post: The key to get it to work in the right resolution is to click the Fullscreen button the instant it appears. If you wait too long before clicking it, or wait until the connection is made and the movie starts, it will shift the whole player into 480p mode and it gets choppy.

Clarification. HD "Movies" aren't supported in the browser. But TV Shows play in HD

Here is another possible solution.

It should automatically take you to a video instead of the amazon page of the video. For some reason they didnt include a fullscreen button on this page though so you can either hit F11 to make your browser fullscreen or alternatively i made it so if you create a profile named "amazon" and install the r-kiosk addon to firefox on the that profile it will automatically start in fullscreen.

This would be almost perfect except that the page it uses http://www.amazon.com/gp/video/streaming/mini-mode.html?asin= has small white borders along the sides which is annoying to me, but maybe some people dont mind.

If you want to test and see if this player works for you without installing my mod just place the appropriate video code found in the page url after "asin=".

example

http://www.amazon.com/The-Hunger-Games/dp/B008602KQI/

changes to

http://www.amazon.com/gp/video/streaming/mini-mode.html?asin=B008602KQI

Here is a short video of how it looks when its all working.

Anxious to try this. The video look great.

I am a bit ambivalent about whether to work around amazon's bad behavior or to just not use amazon any longer.

It is great that it opens up the video automatically in fullscreen, but there are the borders on the right and left and amazon has yet to fix the bug where closed captions are always turned on on the popup player. so untill that is fixed i will probably keep using my first solution where it takes you to the videos page and you have to start it manually

Here is the download to the first fix.
