best xbmc for under €200? - tekjunkie - 2011-08-23 15:11
I have had an xbox running xbmc for a long while and it is great.
But it is time to give it up
So if I was going to spend €200 what would be my best option?
I would like it to have an LCD display so I don't need a TV to play music, always missed that on the XBOX

AppleTV would be my suggestion if you dont mind using networked storage.

But I thought that was not so good with HD?

The ATV2 (and ATV1 I think) is limited to 720p. It will decode 1080p but will only display it at 720p. But then it's on £100 (€115) which is much cheaper than the cheapest HTPC. Any reasonable HTPC is going to cost double that.

cost double €100 or double €200, as I don't mind paying around €200.
Even a bit more, I just want something solid like the old xbox.
It just works.

If you aren't aware Sigma Design's have ported XBMC to their next gen chipsets and should run on the 8656/8657 and 8910/8911 series (they have GPU built in) and could be pretty good sub 200 bucks boxes.
Sigma are saying they will be offering XBMC as an option to their licensees but whether anyone takes up the offer is the question. The 8657 has just reared it's head in the Tvix Xroid A1 Android based player and should be shipping in the next month or so, hopefully someone ships an XBMC box sooner rather than later.
But you could be waiting months for anything to happen at all.

I don't keep up with the latest hardware, but in the UK you will struggle to find anything below £200 (about €230). After a quick look the cheapest I found was a Revo 3700 at £220 - http://www.ebuyer.com/279898-acer-aspire-revo-r3700-net-top-pc-pt-semec-036
Actually that looks a pretty good buy ...

- Add some ram (cheap)
- Add cheap boot drive (e.g. usb pen drive)
Total about 250 euro
I love my XS35GT-V2

if u wanna build.
i got the ER1401 which is cheap as chips. mine cost 140 including remote. no problems on windows 7 apart from menus. could be solved with a 40GB SSD = 40. so 140+40= 180.
