My HTPC-build - joeranjensen - 2011-08-24

Hi!

Finaly Ive decided to go for a new htpc build to replace my
asrock ion 330ht.

What I want is a supersilent and quick htpc who handles the heavyest skins, and handles 3d playback (to be futureproof). All my media is stored on a NAS, so I only need the ssd to be a system disc. I havent decided if Il go with windows or xbmc live, I will give xbmc live a try and if I manage to set up everything as I want, Il go for LIVE. If not, Il go for windowsSmile

I allready own a Harmony One who is going to be used as remote controll, but I need adwice about a good IR-reciever.
Allso I need suggestions of good htpc cases. Ive been looking at the cheap ace polly case, but Im open to take a look at any other casesSmile

After advices from people on this forum and other forums, I came up with this shopinglist. Maybe its a bit overkill, but I think when Im first going to build this machine, Il spend some xtra money to make sure I will be satisfied. Please let me know what you think of this before I click on the "BUY" buttonSmile

Many thanks!!

UPDATE: This is what I ended up with

Case: Apex MI-008
Case fan: Fractal Design 120mm Silent fan, 120 x 120 x 25mm, 1000 RPM, 38.3 CFM, 15 dBA, 3-pi
Mobo: ASUS P8H67-I B3, Socket-1155, mini-ITX, H67, DDR3, 1xPCIe(2.0)x16, SATA 6Gb/s, U
Cpu: Intel® Pentium® Processor G620 Socket-LGA1155, Dual Core, 2.6Ghz, 3MB, 65W, Boxed
Ram: Kingston DDR3 HyperX 1333MHz 2GB CL7-7-7-20, 240pin
Gpu: ASUS GeForce GT 430 1GB Direct CU Silent, PCI-Express 2.0, DDR3, DVI, native-HDMI, Graphics
Psu: be quiet! SFX Power 350W PSU/BN134
SSD: Corsair SSD Force Series? F40A, 40GB, SATA2, 2,5", 280MB/270MB/s read/write
IR reciever: HP ir reciever (a cheap one ordered from ebay)

For now Im running openelec on the machine and Its allmost working 100%, its only missing the ability to power on with my harmony one. My plan to fix this is to order the Antec VERIS Basic Infrared receiver and use Windows7 as os.

Seems good overall!

I don't know about the airflow of your case, but the Silverstone SG05 provides a 120mm front fan and seems adequate.

Just make sure your vid card fits in your case. People seems to recommend the GT430 over the GT520. Look into that (I don't know the details): http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=108097

Thanks for your reply.

Im not sure if I like the look of that silverstone case, but it looks well ventilated.

After what I understand, the GT430 card is only recommended for live tv and I dont have any plans to go the pvr route.

There's also the SG06 (newegg.ca) which is basically the SG05 but with a facia. Anyway, just make sure you have enough ventilation and you're all set for a good HTPC experience imo. I jusy don't know about your specific case.

Just re-read your original post. If you want something supersilent, I would avoid the 80mm fan in your polly case that you linked. The 120mm fan will be quieter.

Yes, I like the Silverstone SST-SG06 caseSmile I just have to find out if my components will fit in it. This is the first time I build myself a htpc, so I need someone to help meHuh please...

Your video card should fit in. The Sg06 case can fit up to 9" inches vid card and your GT520 seems to be 16cm, which is under 9 inches.

You also should have enough space fo your CPU cooler as the i3-2100T is not high.

NiceSmile Do you think I should replace the original fan with a more silent? Does the prosessor come with cooling paste, or should I order that separate? Anything else I should think of?

- eskro - 2011-08-24

i would go with these here,,,

Intel® Pentium® Processor G620 949,-
Kingston DDR3 HyperX 1333MHz 2GB 129,-
Corsair SSD Force Series™ F40A, 40GB 699,-
Gainward GeForce GT 520 1GB PhysX CUDA 369,-
ASUS P8H67-I B3, Socket-1155 749,-
Noctua NF-R8 80mm Vifte 119,-

these parts will do all you need,,,
* Silent operation
* PLays any 1080P movie flawlessly
* Eats any heavy XBMC skins
* SSD is big enough for Windows & Linux

No need to pay more then that,,,
you can also remove the Noctua Fan and try the default 80mm fan
that comes with the Polly case but,
my feeling is that its a noisy fan,,,,
Cpu comes with thermal paste and everything,,,

You can always do it cheaper and get the same performance but unless your on a strict budget then why not get what you want ?

As for the thermal paste I'm a fan of Arctic Cooling MX range myself especially if its your first build being its non conductive so one less worry Smile

So in other words, my setup is a waste of money? Smile I just want to make sure I will be satisfied with the buildRolleyes
I did just read thru the "Macroblocking with new sandy bridge build, dxva2 enabled" thread, and it looks like there has been a fix for this. Does this mean that I could go for the i3-2100t and use the onboard graphics?

- eskro - 2011-08-25

* Silent operation
* play SD movies (DivX, XviD)
* play DVD movies
* play 720P movies
* play 1080P movies
* stream 1080P Hulu content
* stream 1080P Netflix movies (Windows only)

You guys make me very unsure, but I think I will go for my I3+GT 520 build. Im very happy for Eskros advices, but money is not a very big issue. I may be using the htpc for ripping bluerays aswell, and then Il need the extra power. Right?

Any good IR recievers for my Harmony One?
