Z68 with i3? Use onboard HDMI or standalone GPU? - psychoholica - 2011-09-07

Im putting together a new machine and after doing some searching need a little advise.

Is there any advantage to a stand alone Nvidia GPU vs. the onboard HDMI thats part of the new Intel Z68 chipset? I'm planning on getting the low voltage core i3 2100T to go along with it. Most of my videos are .mkv's in 1080p format.

thanks!

I have been wondering the same thing...

the Intel Z68 is a fairly new platform!
spec wise, you shouldn't need a separate GPU card
if your video chipset is the GT430....

I guess that's the point. I have been looking at the specs on some Z68 mobos and all they say is "Multi GPU Technology Support for 2-Way ATI CrossFireX™/NVIDIA SLI technology" which to regular mortals like me is pretty confusing.

Huh Anyone could explain what that means for the HTPC-for-XBMC builder? Saves us money or limits playback capabilities? Huh

i was talking about a motherboard that had built-in GT430 graphics

Thanks. That means my confusion was based on the fact that I was looking at motherboards without GPU, but only compatible with any of them...

The Z68 chipset motherboards all have Intel HDMI graphics standard, its one of the Z68s features. Id like to have this as energy efficient as possible so if I dont need the Nvidia GPU Id rather not have it.

Anyone using Z68 only?

i believe that the 24fps issue that the INTEL sandy bridge has still goes on here,,,

- psychoholica - 2011-09-08

Ok just poked around and read all sorts of stuff on the 24fps. bummer and lame all at the same time. I read some stuff about disabling UAC as a fix, does that work with xbmc? A few other posts said you didnt need to do the UAC trick.

Anyone running with the fix UAC?

- eskro - 2011-09-08

UAC doesnt fix 24fps issue,,,

it supposedly fixes the macro-blocking issue when using XBMC,,,,

Never trust an Intel GPU. The company's driver division is incompetent. Hell, the whole GPU division of Intel is.

+1

its crazy how they can produce bad-ass CPU's but shitty INTEL GPU's...

- psychoholica - 2011-09-08

Alright, that pretty much seals it.... Thanks for the help, eskro, great guide you have written up. If you're looking for help make sure to read the links on his signature.

Intel is not willing to invest in the talent.

Nvidia has 3DFX talent. AMD has SI talent.

Only really awesome and talented guys I know about at Intel's GPU division are on the open source side like Keith Packard so they have little say.

So wait, just so I understand, is it the chipset itself that has the trouble with 24p, or is it the integrated intel graphics that have trouble with the 24p?

I'm trying to figure out if the Zotac with Nvidia built in would have the same problem.

Thank you
