bluray Wrote:Since it is a big case with ton of air vents, I think that it will be fine without case fan. You can un-plug the included case fans, and monitor the temperature with/without case fans!

I'll pull stock fans and monitor. In unlikely event temp is to much, I will mount Scythe SY1225SL12L 120mm "Slipstream" Case Fans and/or switch to PSU with 102mm fan. THANKS!

If you want a very silent fan and can draw a lot of air, this one might be the best fan- SilenX Effizio Thermistor EFX-12-15T 120mm Case Fan

Anyone tried this build with pcsx2? How does it run?

CPU is definitely strong enough.
if anything, u can add a dedicated GPU card later on.

What about mini-ITX? - flymods - 2012-03-01

Is there any reason to steer away from the Mini-ITX version of this board?

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005JI5B9I/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?ie=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER

I have amazon prime and its the only A75 in stock atm.

I'm looking at that paired with the A83850 and 4gb of ddr3 1600. Just looking to run xbmc live.

Sounds good but is there a difference other than the size of the board? I like the smaller board and if it's the same minus some expansion slots then I would rather get the Mini-ITX.

Scratch that - flymods - 2012-03-01

The A8 and A6 don't seem to be compatible with XBMC live so I will have to go another rout Sad I don't want to run windows on my HTPC...

- mortic - 2012-03-03

I am new at building a HTPC from scratch. So this build is a HUGE help so thank you, eskro.

I am finding it hard to find the PSU that you recommend(SS-400ET) so I was looking at SeaSonic S12II. That PSU is physically larger then the original one, so there is some concern about cooling. What other PSU would you recommend in its place?

In addition, for the CPU+iGPU Amazon points out that for $12 more I can get AMD-A8-3870. It looks like that it is compatible with the motherboard. Is there any reason not to get the newer version?

- VortexDK - 2012-03-06

I just finished finding all the part to my new dedicated HTPC and just getting ready to order i, just thought I would post it here to if anyone have a good idea for something.

[CPU+iGPU] AMD A8-3850 APU Quad-Core Processor $154.26
[MOBO] ASRock A75M FM1 CIR USB3.0 SATAIII UEFI μATX $87.67
[CASE] Lian-li PC-C36 $80.02 including the PSU -I already own this
[PSU] Be-quiet 300W TFX PSU
[RAM] Kingston HyperX Genesis Special Edition Grey 1600 MHz PC3-12800 CL9 $37.88
[CPU Cooler] Scythe BIG Shuriken 2 $56.91

yes the prices are insane compared to what you see around here, but that's because I live Denmark and we have our "wonderful" taxes so it is actually pretty cheep.

- eskro - 2012-03-06

Denmark rocks!!

your build looks ok to me.

- VortexDK - 2012-03-06

thanks thats great to hear, I'm also going to add my samsung bluray drive.
Right now I'm going to use old 2T WD caviar Black HDD I know this one is noisy and gets hot but the HDD prices are simply way out of proportions right now.
if you have to make an estimation, do you think I would need to have any casefans for this build, I do have 2 72 mm fans which came with the case but I rather not use them I dont have to. when I get it build, I will also do some checks.

- eskro - 2012-03-06

try without, but if anything, u can buy extra hardware to control their speed
if they can be hooked on the motherbaord

You will enjoy your AMD A8-3850 HTPC. You will enjoy it even more with BD-ROM (like rip BD in the background while watching BD).

Try to playback some BD with the fans, and then observe the temperature and noise. If it is too noisy, you can disconnect the fans and playback some BD, and then observe the temperature and noise. If the temperature is okay without the fan, you can leave it disconnect.

What about A8-3850 together with Big Shuriken 2? Sometimes I read it is ok, sometimes not. Thinking about the same build and still not decided if the cooler will be ok.
