I didn't do anything special. I simply installed Windows 7 and launched 7MCE....

See my screen shot below.....

OK, so it will show up under Extras once installed. I'll try it when I get home.

Can you find from Microsoft or another source where it states that WMC natively supports the MKV file format?

No, it is not under Extras. You'll find it in 7MCE main menu.

It have been a long time. I might have installed other codecs right after I installed W7. I believe it is K-Lite- Download K-Lite Codec Pack. I still preferred using MPC-HC and TMT5 as an external player for bitstreaming though.....7MCE+Media Browser+MPC-HC integration is seamless!

First off thanks for all the information eskro. I am going to go with setup but Just a quick question, XBMC doesn't support BD-ROM? Is everyone just using windows to run them?

I plan to just watch 1080p. & 3d once I get a 3d tv setup so this setup should be good according to the group 7.

I am going to order the a8-3870k since it is 140$ free shipping and $15 gift card on newegg. But could you tell me is this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157260 the same board you recommend?

If you install AnyDVD HD to decrypt blu-ray disc, XBMC can playback blu-ray on BD-ROM. A8-3870K and HD6550D is a great all-in-one APU and it will playback everything......

That's fine.

eskro can you recommend a PSU cause that Seasonic is out of stock. I am not really sure what I need to look for in a PSU. Best I could come up with was this one...

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182202

or

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817159124

The main reason I chose these is because they looked to have the same specs or better and I have 20% off Rosewill and 15% off Coolmax, but if they are totally not the answer that is fine. I would rather have what works than save a few bucks.

How about this- Antec EarthWatts Green EA-380D Green 380W! It's very popular among HTPC users and it is very well rated too.....

at this point, for the SilverStone ML03 case,
i'd go for the SIlverStone Strider 400w

That is because XBMC don't offer BD menu, but it'll playback BD directly on BD-ROM. If you want menus, chapter, etc, you need an external player for that. You can find the guide to setup TMT5/PDVD10-12 in my signature....

RE: [Micro-ATX] A8-3850 (4x2.9Ghz) + HD6550D - WHOAA - 2012-03-20

Well this is my setup then...

AMD A8-3870K
ASRock A75M
Kingston HyperX 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1866
Antec EarthWatts Green EA-380D
Newegg for $288 + $8 = $296

Silverstone ML03b
Amazon for $55

So total = $351

Not entirely sold on the case yet though. Any problems anyone can see with this setup?

Well, this case "SilverStone SG06B Aluminum/SECC SFX 300 W with 80 PLUS certification Power Supply" will be feature in my next build. For $119 shipped, you'll get a very well built Silverstone case and Silverstone included a very good 300w PSU too. I thought that it might be good for your A8-3870K build too...

If you want to read more customer reviews, you can read it here- Customer Reviews of the Silverstone SG06-B....

If you want to save a little more money, you can opt for 4gb of ram instead. 4gb is all you need for W7+XBMC HTPC.....

That is only 4gb of ram 2 x 2gb. I am looking on the ASRock site and it doesn't show this ram I got from eskros guide working with the motherboard. Any ideas?

Sorry, I was reading another thread. The guy had 2x4gb, and it stuck on me. AsRock is kinda picky on RAM. If you want to be 100% sure, the recommended RAM on their website are the safest choices.....here is one of the recommended RAM- Kingston HyperX X2 Grey Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3.

(2012-03-13, 21:19)lath19 Wrote: So I've read through several of Eskro's threads on different builds and decided this is the one for me. I'll be running Win7 as the OS and have no interest in gaming. The primary use will be streaming 1080P movies, music, and some light web browsing when I'm too lazy to grab my laptop.

Currently I'm looking at these parts (prices from Amazon):
ASRock MB-A75M ($75)
AMD A8-3850 APU ($125)
SilverStone ML03B ($65)
Patriot Memory Torqx 2 Series 64 GB SSD ($65 after MIR)
Kingston Technology HyperX Blu 8GB 1333MHz DDR3 CL9 ($41)

So my order from Amazon hasn't shipped yet and I'm thinking of canceling the Torqx sata ii drive in lieu of a sata iii ssd. Given the added cost do you feel the sata iii drive is worth it for the added performance? If so any recommendations on ssd's would be much appreciated.
