toymachine2009 Wrote:So this build can play 1080p and 3D no problem? Basically this APU is a quad core CPU and an HD6550 graphic card mixed into one? So this would be the same as buying a quad core CPU and an hd6550 gpu separately correct?

I'm looking to build one more htpc and I can spend around $450 but if anything more than this is overkill why spend more..
amd a8-3850 is the best all-in-one (cpu+igpu) on the market today and the trinity is coming in earlier 2012. the amd hd6550h is equivalent to hd6570 discrete gpu. you can find the entire info on a8-3850 here- Great Gift (AMD A8-3850).

also the a8-3800 has a TDP of 65w

~120$

edit: lol just saw your other post. http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=114888
if you want the lesser core with lower tdp, you can go with the none-50 version. it should be able to do everything you want, but slightly less core!

To me it seems that this new Llano A8 or A6 APU is the best way to go! One less GPU and less noise and can be a SFF!

And best of all flawless playback! no Macroblocking or anything from what people have been telling me who own it!

i think that the A6-3600 is perfect but it depends on which
HTPC case you'll place it in!

example, the ANTEC ISK-100, has a 90W picoPSU built-in,
meaning, you have to go with a 65W version because,
100W TDP is too much for the case...
so the A6-3600 at $120 with a CPU passMARK of 5000+ would be golden in there!!
(im seriously thinking in doing this build!)

the A8-3800 i dont go crazy for it,,
yeah its 65W but still, its like $160!!!
when u can buy the A8-3850 for $140, i mean, see where im going?

Great post. Thank you very much. I have a question though... The case you recommend here is too wide for my media stand, so I'm looking for a narrower one.

I read your other really great thread with other case suggestions.

Will the Lian Li PC-C37 house this motherboard and cpu+igpu? It's only 3.7" tall, and one person on newegg complains that it (obviously) doesn't fit a full-sized graphics card, but I'm guessing this should work, right?

I've got another misgiving about this case, which is that I eventually will want to upgrade it to have a tuner so that I can DVR stuff. Do you know if that case will house a tuner card?

If not, could anyone perhaps suggest another case? I'm not as constrained on height as I am on width. Anything wider than 18 inches is probably going to be a problem.

Lian Li PC-C37 is an amzing case..
anyone who owns it loves it!

just use a low profile ready video card
which i link u too in my HTPC guide.

yes, u can add a TV TUNER card later on....

Great. Thanks man Smile. I don't need a low profile card if I'm going to go with the A8-3850 though right?

- eskro - 2011-11-26

exactly!

Lian Li PC-C37 is a great case, but it is too thin though. you might not have enough room to install any aftermarket cpu cooler. most a8-3850 owners replaced the original cpu cooler with aftermarket cpu cooler to reduce noise!

Anyone who has this build.. How is it with 3D and linux?

Want to use it for my 3D tv!

- armedmonkey - 2011-12-05

It should be great for 3D. I'm getting a very similar build for that purpose. (just different case and peripherals).

The OS shouldn't matter. If it's x86 compliant and has 2gb+ ram, it will run any OS.

Has anyone found this cpu at a reputable US online store lately?

Im looking for the retail box

- armedmonkey - 2011-12-06

Same here. I found it on provantage but they say 3-4 week wait. Way too long for me =(.

How about this place, and they have it with bundles too- AMD A8-3850.

If you want to use this CPU I would recommend ONLY ONE cooler which can adequatelly cool this CPU in the low profile case, and without noise. It is Scythe Big Shuriken 2, only 58mm in height, very silent and powerful. On the full load temperature is mostly beetween 40 and 58 degrees, only once it went over the 60. In idle mod temperature was arround 20C. No other low profile cooler can make this performance.
