Do I need to buy one separately? Would you recommend a particular one?

Edit:
Disregard that it does :/

Yes the CPU comes with it's own stock cooler.... yes you can use the stock one.

fwiw, I tried getting away with the stock cooler and gave up after a week. It did fine keeping everything cool but it was loud. I didn't want to spend 50 on the big shuriken cooler but after installing it I can definitely say it was worth it.

Did you select "Cool N Quiet" option and lower CPU and case fans to level 2 in bios when you used stock CPU cooler?

When the Cooler is noisy, its time to change...
try to tweak your CPU fan speed on a gigabyte motherboard like i have lol
its simply impossible and its annoying...

Sorry to read about the difficulty of your Gibabyte mobo........but I'm asking "lath19", and he own AsRock mobo......

i know, but its to make you understand that
going for the stock cooler isn't the solution for everyone..

Like Gibabyte motherboard example,
there's just no way to tweak the CPU Fan Speed.
No bios features whatsoever. even when using the latest bios version.
i feel like they simply didnt care...

Now u can reply on SPeedFan, only if it works lol
however, SPeedFan isnt able to tweak my CPU Fan Speed either. it simply cant!

Now there's this thing called Gibabyte easy tune app,
but still, once u reboot your machine,
CPU Fan Speed setting isnt remembered making the app useless...

hey great thread here for a newbie like me...would 3.5" hard drives fit in the ML03B case? i haven't ordered an SSD yet and figured maybe i can hold off a bit and wait for even better prices since i have a spare 3.5" hd lying around

Congrats Lath19!! I hope you are enjoying with your new HTPC.

eskro,

I have been referring your HTPC guide more often as and when I buy a component. My HTPC setup is exactly going to be '[Micro-ATX] A8-3850 (4x2.9Ghz) + HD6550D' as per your guide.

I am done buying CPU, SSD, Memory, Remote keyboard. Now I am taking another major step in my buying process. i.e., going to buy Motherboard, Power supply and case.

Do you think I need to buy PWM cooling fan and cpu fan like lath19? Your guidance and suggestion would be of immense help to me.

Thanks,
Eskay

ASRock MB-A75M ($75)
AMD A8-3850 APU ($125)
Silverstone ML03B ($65)
Silverstone 400W PSU ($49)
Patriot Memory Torqx 2 Series 64 GB SSD ($65 after MIR)
Kingston Technology HyperX Blu 8GB 1333MHz DDR3 CL9 ($41)
Scythe Big Shuriken 2100 ($53)
Logitech K400 ($40)
HP MCE Remote & IR Receiver ($21)
Coolink PWM Case Fan ($13)

Total = $547.

Slightly more than I originally wanted to spend but it was well worth the money. The case fan and CPU cooler are ridiculously quiet with the speed scaled down and everything runs nice and cool. Plus I was able to use the stock APU cooler in my desktop which reduced noise as I was able to take advantage of the PWM function.

well, about PWM fans, it depends on the type of control your after....
those need to be hooked to 4pin fan headers on your mobo.

but as long as u buy a silent fan, i see little need to PWM fans attached to mobo fan header.

Thanks,
Eskay
