Was not thinking i need a VPN if I can get the http stream. What I had in mind was like the old crude method of creating channels from strm files. Select another strm file to change the channel. From my understanding of streaming using VPN you have to have a monster upload stream since no transcoding is taking place. What I liked about this solution is I was able to have very little bandwidth but get a decent picture.
Does XBMC for linux support flv files? Because the http stream is nothing more than flv.

I'm asking about streaming from the HDHRP directly from outside of the local LAN without any intermediate like TV::Server. It sounds like that is what Chris732 is doing but I could be wrong. The HDHRP can be streamed directly if you are on local LAN using http://<HDHRP IP:5004/auto/v4 to tune to channel 4 with VLC, but does not work outside of the local LAN, even if you setup port forwarding. Did you get this to work outside with just port forwarding?

Are you asking how to stream TV outside the LAN or is HTTP stream something different? I am able to stream both Ceton and HDHR Prime outside. Just set up a port forward on your router.

No i am streaming using TVserver. Streaming off HDHRP (DLNA) takes massive bandwidth and would not be feasible outside my LAN.

I was able to get XBMC to stream from TV::Server outside using the addon. Works pretty well, except when I change channels, I get tuner unavailable message. mcheng89 says he is looking at the problem. It sort of works, so try it out, it could be my setup.

How are you changing channels? You using the the web browser 8888/m/ page? I don't have any issues changing channels. I normally watch using VLC and direct stream but even when I use the web browser I don't have any problems.

I can see how it works in XBMC windows but my questions is how it can work in linux which the raspberry pi is based. @dbqbbq stated others had it working on the pi... my question is how
The instructions says " Copy script.tvserver (in the xbmc folder) to %APPDATA%\XBMC\addons" Appdata is only on Windows.

Yea - web browser is not a problem. In XBMC, changing channel is the same as web browser, hit Enter to see guide and use arrows to navigate to next channel and hit Enter again to select. 95% of the time after I select, I get tuner unavailable in XBMC even though there is a tuner free. This tuner unavailable problem only happens when using Raspberry Pi XBMC and the Addon for me.

Pi directory should be: /storage/.xbmc/addons

For some reason. I either have a permission issue or I am doing something wrong. Cant transfer anything to that directory.

Are you using Putty SCP (pscp.exe) or something else?

OK, the previous directory location was for OpenElec.
Raspbmc Directory: /home/pi/.xbmc/addons/
Username: pi
Pass: raspberry
I think with Raspbmc, samba is on by default. You could also try using Windows explorer and navigate to \\IP.OF.PI\ and look for the .xbmc directory.

Also, are you the same siak on tvpad? I'll probably need to modify the server a bit to handle user auth, since the tvpad cant pass that in.
I had a script that generated the channel file, but I lost it. I'll rewrite it sometime this week I guess.

You say the tuner unavailable only happens when using Raspberry Pi XBMC. Have you tried XBMC on a Windows machine or are you comparing this only to the http streaming? There was an issue with getting available tuners in the older versions of the program but that was fixed around version 5.8 or something (don't remember exactly when but it's been a while).
Also, have you tried using the PVR addon in XBMC instead of the script addon? I use the PVR addon in XBMC on Windows from outside my LAN and have no troubles.

If you can't get the Raspberry Pi setup to work and have access to a Windows machine try that (as a test, not a permanent solution). I know for a fact that the windows addons, both script and pvr, work outside the LAN (this is how I use my setup) so it would be a good way of validating the rest of your setup (i.e. everything but the Pi).

I actually read this entire thread lastnight. Actually learned a ton. I am at my vacation home this week and I dont have the pi with me so i cant test. I did setup a virtual image using windows and got both the livetv and the programs addon working. Provided I can get access to the /.xbmc/ directory on the pi it should all work.

I just got this installed for the first time and I think I may be missing a step. First of all with the 0.6.0 version when you add a Ceton4 the IP address is fixed to 192.168.200.2 no matter what I type in the address box field. I click save settings and my IP is there but after restarting the server it defaults back to 192.168.200.2. I fixed that by rolling back to version 0.5.10.
Now my other issue which I have not fixed is with VLC. When I try to play a stream I get and error in the log:

VLC: Failed to send command to vlcIs there another step to setup besides copying the libstream_out_transcode_plugin.dll to the plugin folder? I was on VLC 2.02 and upgraded to 2.08, both have the same result. I see vlc starting in task manager.
