"Best" file protocol for sharing with AppleTV2? - thejon - 2012-03-09
I know "best" is very subjective. I'm just hoping for some clarifications.
The FAQ for performance on AppleTV2 recommends trying a different protocol, "especially" if you're using SMB.
I'm running a linux box, all media is either on external HD or internal SATA, shared via SMB. Running library functions via mysql. Content is wireless to AppleTV2. Also very occasionally use my laptop (Macbook) to watch videos on the deck. Very very occasionally stuff gets streamed to the GF's windows desktop.
I'm seeing some choppiness; mostly in audio. I've noticed it quite a bit in two HD movies (which I understand may be agitated by the external USB connection). I did do a couple of tweaks based on the FAQ (16 bit audio and Optical instead of HDMI), haven't had a chance to test yet (that happens tonight).
Is it worth switching to a new protocol? I'm certainly capable of setting it all up via FTP; but what about time-outs? Does it just re-auth every time it tried to poll? Or is there some sort of keep-alive function? Something else I'm missing? Is there really that much of a change?
I'm also willing to try out webDAV if necessary / if it's going to work better for my situation.

Can you explain why? I'm going to have to redo my library (so far as watched and whatnot), is what I'm going to gain worth it?

In theory, NFS has the least amount of overhead, but I would suggested testing it out first. Setup a folder with a few problematic movies and share them with NFS and see if it resolves your issue.
I had some studderring issues and I use smb - tested out nfs and it was worse for me. Turned it off and went back to smb and the issue went away - perhaps the reboot of my NAS did it, but I didn't really care why since it was working now.
Point it - you can test without switching everything.

I am actually about to test FTP that way for my one lone WiFi ATV since I sometimes have stuttering with SMB. Overall its fine, but on some high bit-rate movies it gets choppy...
I have tried NFS in the past with mixed results but I tend to run into permissioning issues that just do not make any sense... So i prefer SMB overall...

Something else you can try is to go wired instead of wireless or try to compress the videos to a lower bit rate. I have tried NFS and FTP but have had problems with both so I keep coming back to SMB, mainly because I use a windows machine. So what I did to fix my problems was I went wired and made the BluRay .iso files into .mkv with handbrake and the ATV2 settings and everything streams fine, I didn't try wireless with the compressed files so I don't know how those stream with wireless. Hopefully when the ATV3 is ready for XBMC I wont have to do that anymore.
