XBMC CPU usage - yozh - 2012-03-25

Hello,

I always had this "problem" and always forget to post.

Does XBMC process supposed to consume CPU even when idle ? I see somewhere between 25%-60% when doing PS AUX.

I usually leave my AppleTV on with XBMC on, and some times every 3-5 days, I have to manually SSH in and kill XBMC due to it not responding to remote commands, seems like XBMC just freezes. Is this normal, I have been having this problem for a while now, and always forget to post about till now.

It shouldn't freeze, but you can lower CPU usage in XBMC v11 (just released today) using Dirty regions (wiki).

It's kind of left over from the old Xbox days, where XBMC assumes it can use as much of the CPU as it wants to constantly re-render the GUI. Dirty Regions is new code that tells XBMC to only update the GUI when it needs to. Dirty Regions doesn't always work correctly on all platforms, so it's not enabled by default, but it should be perfectly stable on the ATV1.
