Clarification! MythTV what works/not - andyb2000 - 2012-04-12

Hi Folks,
Sorry if this is going over old ground but there is so much mis-information around its difficult to figure out.
Does XBMC work with MythTV backend and do pause/timeshift?

Reason I ask is I constantly see notices in PVR development saying this doesn't work (I currently use TVHeadend as backend, which I know doesn't support timeshifting, hence moving to MythTV), but all references to MythTV say that timeshift works.

Can anyone advise yes/no categorically on this one!

Short answer: Pause works, timeshift doesn't.
To keep uptodate with the progress, just read the first post in the relative thread:

I was wondering the same thing. I use tv headend at the moment and I can pause using the internal xbmc buffer. If using mthtv as a backend, is it the backend that does it? eg I can press record a few minutes in and it will record the whole thing?

To further clarify the xbmc-mythtv situation, currently there are 3 methods for xbmc to communicate with mythtv:
1) XBMC core has for quite long time support for the myth:// protocol
@andyb2000: The link you posted refers to that method
You just add it as media source. You don't need a special PVR branch for this. It worked in Camelot and Dharma and it works in Eden.

2) MythBox add-on found in the addon repos. Again you don't need a special PVR branch for this. It works in Eden, it worked in Dharma too.

3) MythTv-cmyth PVR addon. This needs a special PVR branch. Explained here:

There is also the MythTv PVR addon which will be discontinued.

In all 3 methods, the pause of LiveTv works (I'm guessing through the internal video buffer), but timeshift (go back and forth in the live stream) does not work.

I guess that at some point (hopefully soon) timeshift will be working in the PVR addon.

Ah, thanks guys that makes a bit more sense now so I know where I'm heading when I try moving from TVHeadend over to MythTV

Just installed Ubuntu 12.04 (precise pangolin) from the official Ubuntu repos. My experiences far:

- Connecting to the MythTV backend (version 25 as part of the official repo) via the myth:// prefix doesn't work with Eden (also made it into the official repo now) doesn't work anymore due to some protocol differences according to the logs and mentioned elsewhere (http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=129021&highlight=mythtv+25+protocol) in this forum.
- Same goes for the MythTV addon mentioned above.

REAL drawback as all of this used to work with MythTV 24 and Eden...

But I understand that version 25 integration will take some time before it will make it into the official repositories unless one's willing to work with development snapshots..
