Wireless Routers - homewrek - 2012-04-16

Suggestions for a wireless router capable of handling an HTPC E-350 APU (Living Room) Playstation 3 (Master Bed Room) Xbox 360 (Boys Room) Ipad (Daughter's Room) Kindle Fire (Wifey). Htpc is running 24/7 XBMC 11.0 / Torrent Box, which is the only device plugged into a Linksys Router, everything else is connected over WiFi...the router is just not cutting it when we are all home and one person want to stream Netflix, the others want to web browse, watch youtube videos, Hulu etc. Just alot of fighting and compromising.....not cool when you have teens yelling across rooms "your slowing down the connection!!!) Just today I set up the PS3 in our Bedroom just for Netflix took a while to load and froze a couple of times but once it stayed steady....the yelling started lol. The Kindle lost connection, My son complaining about Youtube not working etc. I know I have an entry level router, when I got it I didnt plan for these many devices. Just wanted to hear from you guys, what are you using or what do you recommend.

I have a e4200 router...i believe it is the same for all the E routers so make sure you get the latest firmware as there was a bug in the firmware that even though you disabled the WPS setup it would not disable

and with a hack floating around that would allow people to exploit a flaw in the WPS setup and take over your router

I did know of a website that listed all routers and whether WPS actually disabled or not but i cant find it....so just check release notes on recent updates and it should note a fix for WPS disabling

would be worth checking out before you buy to make sure the hole has been fixed

Thanks for the heads up bigdog...Will be doing some research in the next couple of days before I pull the trigger on a router that will fit my needs. Is the e 4200 still working good for you and how many devices over wifi are connected.

RE: Wireless Routers - bigdog66 - 2012-04-16

been great...haven't had any problems
I have the V1...the V2 is out there

although a limited version there is a version of ddwrt available for the v1...the chipset in the v2 means it will never have a ddwrt version available ....if that matters to you

total wifi devices in use pretty much everyday i believe is 8

I bought the E4200......cant complain. dual band 2.4, 5.0 MHz and you can separate them for two networks. Should keep everyone happy. Also the ASUS RT 56U has really good reviews I almost bought it until I found the Linksys refurbished web site

Thanks Jester, great reviews on those links you provided. The Asus RT 56U http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833320062&Tpk=ASUS%20RT%2056U is 125.99 at NewEgg and the E4200 v1 179.99 v2 199.99 http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Order=BESTMATCH&N=100010072&isNodeId=1&Description=e4200&x=0&y=0
I'm liking the reviews for the Asus and the "price"

This "Linksys Refurbished E4200-RM" is $89 shipped. As I preached in the link in post #2, manufacture refurbished is as good and in some case it is better than new, it carry the same warranty as new model. I bought the Linksys Refurbished E3200-RM since I posted it last December. It works flawless so far.......
