RE: [Release] XBMC Backup - bolter - 2014-01-22

Currently running the latest nightly of Gotham, was also running 0.4.3 of XBMC Backup and everything was dandy. XBMC just updated to ver.0.4.4 of XBMC Backup and now says script failed. So downloaded version.0.5.1 and still says script failed after pressing backup.

Same thing happened to me, but I'm still running Frodo 12.2. It just updated from 0.4.3 to 0.4.4
Sad

Same here.

After I did a clean install, still had the same problem.
I've not tested it without an advanced xml file at the start-up of restoring yet but what i found out is that if you remove the addon option in the second tab it works with version 0.4.5.
Downloaded this version from Github, probably version 0.4.4 will have the same issue.
https://github.com/robweber/xbmcbackup
Hoping also that they can resolve the problem.
Maybe there is a way to use 0.4.3 temporary untill it is resolved but I have no idea where I can find that version.
By the way I'm using version 12.3 Frodo.

If you updated from version 0.4.3 you can go back in the configuration option to 0.4.3.
Maybe this helps for you guys

Thanks for the info, your link downloads 0.4.5 and as you said about the addon select, it works for now. Just means it doesn't backup user addon information.

Edit: can confirm that 0.4.4 and 0.5.1 do also work with user addons not selected for backup. So this might be a place to start looking for a problem.

The issue is with the download manager trying to download the file, not anything specific to this addon itself. You'll have to ask about this in General Support.

Issues with 4.4 and above

My apologies to anyone who upgraded and is now having issues. I did not find this problem with my normal testing methods but after trying a few more things did start to see errors when "User Addons" was selected. I think the problem is with my old friend, the UnicodeError. I've applied a fix to github, anyone who is able please download and try out the new zip from there. The version numbers are stil 4.5 and 5.1 as these are not published yet and I saw no reason to increment them.

If there are still errors with the github version of the addon please post a debug log so I can see exactly what the problem is. My UnicodeError assumption is based on what I'm seeing with my tests. If this works I'll get a fix into the repo ASAP. Thanks.

Thanks for the log. Please confirm that you did indeed download the newest version from github. I am skeptical because of the error you are getting and the fact that this line from the log file: return string.encode('UTF-8','replace') is no longer in the code.

RE: [Release] XBMC Backup - Samu-rai - 2014-01-25

I'm trying to restore from a backup on a remote server through webdav. However, as yet have not been able to get past 'gathering file list'.

Should this be possible? Has anyone been able to restore from a remote network location, and if so what protocol did you use?

I can confirm that yes I am using the latest (went and got it again, just to make sure) still getting the same error. But as I said before, it is a bit strange, because I am running it on 2 different machines and it works on one but not the other.

RE: [Release] XBMC Backup - robweber - 2014-01-25

I'm not sure but maybe XBMC won't install the repo version over the top of the other one as they have the same version numbers? Are you completely uninstalling the first, then installing the new one off github? If not please do that. The message in the log you posted is definitely from an old version; the line I changed is the exact one listed in your log.

Quick note regarding why it may work on a different machine. This particular error has to do with files that contain non-ASCII characters in the name. It could be that an addon that exists on one machine does not exist on another.

RE: [Release] XBMC Backup - bolter - 2014-01-25

I have totally removed the old versions before installing latest from Github. I have noticed sometimes after removing 0.5.1 it then says 0.4.5 then after removing that it says 0.4.4 very strange. Yes I do have different addons on the machine that doesn't work correctly (XBMC Adult repro). Does this mean it will never work correctly on that machine.

Edit: is there someway to get version 0.4.3 as this worked fine for me.

Edit: Edit: have done some experimenting, tried the following from github - Gotham-dev, master and both failed. Then tried frodo-dev and bingo it works.

RE: [Release] XBMC Backup - Samu-rai - 2014-01-25

@robweber

Apologies for going slightly off topic, but I didn't want to presume it would be OK to PM you directly.

I'm not sure if you're aware, but there's a wide spread issue on Android TV boxes (and possibly others on the Android platform), whereby the guisettings.xml will sporadically be lost upon shut down.

This obviously causes a massive headache, especially for those using skins with great amounts of customization.

jjhtpc came up with a solution detailed here, which uses the app Smanager to run scripts to copy the GUI settings and then restore on start up.

This, however, comes with it's own pitfalls. Namely that the devices needs to be 'rooted' in order to access the required directories within XBMC, but it also relies on 3rd party software, and could perhaps be overwhelming for the 'regular' XBMC user.

So, my train of thought is that there must be away to accomplish the same thing, but by using python within XBMC.

Doing so would remove the draw backs to jjhtpc's method, but could also make the process much more efficient too. Storing the XML back-up within the addon_data springs to mind, or the ability to scheduling XML back-ups?

This is all well and good in theory, but I'm afraid when it comes to implementation I'm found lacking Nod

So I was trying to think of people with the ability to build a script/add-on that could solve this issue once and for all, and my first thought was you!

I realise you are busy with XBMC Backup, so understand if you don't have the time to spare, but thought there was no harm in at least dropping you a line.

Anyway, thanks for your time, and all your work with this awesome add-on.

RE: [Release] XBMC Backup - meule - 2014-01-27

It also gets script fail on windows pc, so is not only android related.

There is a PR in the XBMC repo that is supposed to address this issue. Basically XBMC will make a .bak file and test for corruption and restore if needed on startup. I've been waiting to see if this goes through as this would take care of this problem for a lot of people.

RE: [Release] XBMC Backup - Samu-rai - 2014-01-27

That sounds like exactly what we all need.

Any noise from the devs if this will make it into Gotham?

If not, do you think you would be willing to create a script to achieve something similar?
