Case for unraid server.. - jangjong - 2012-06-01

Hi guys!

Since now I have a perfect htpc for myself (http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=132688) I started looking into getting a unraid server for myself..

I picked out parts that I would need.. but I can't decide which case to go with.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811146075

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811133094

I have a micro center store near by and they have all these cases for under $30 after rebate.. and they're only $2-$3 difference
I know antec three hundred is one of the best but I'm trying to keep the cost down as much as possible.. I got parts for the server for about $70 so i just want the total to be under $100 haha. I'll post up the detail spec after I build it and set it up.

Which case would you guys recommend out of those 4 cases?

Personally I love the NZXT cases as there is a lot of room inside. A lot of love here for the Antec 300 which is just a few dollars more. I just bought the Antec 302 case for my unRaid build. I liked the way the HD bays were situated.

NZXT is FTW! Just bought me one witch will replace my Antec 300....

NZXT H2 White ... they also have it in black.....

Sexy... sound damper .... lots of HD's ..... wife likes.... what else can you ask for.

Another to consider....

Tempest 410

To clean there fans and stuff is super easy... take look at videos.

RE: Case for unraid server.. - jangjong - 2012-06-01

hmm.. thank you for other suggestion.. but they're twice as much as what i've picked above lol

i know those are good cases.. but i would like to get one out of those 4 because i am trying to keep the cost down.

RE: Case for unraid server.. - Beer40oz - 2012-06-01

Ok sounds good... well choose one that has good HD space and good airflow....

I too like the NZXT of all of those.

Whatever you do don't go cheap on the power supply. Get a good one like a Seasonic or Antec. I am a big fan of the Seasonic SS-300ET and SS-350ET for low price, high quality, no frills PSUs. If it's on sale the Antec EA-380D is a good one too.

Any reason why you would choose NZXT over Zalman Z9 ? ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811235026 )

I'm narrowing them down to those two because of the cable management, but I was thinking I may like Z9 better because of how HDD bay's set up and there's a fan for the hdd..

Why not go for the Sharkoon Rebel 9 Economy (or iCute Hegemon as it is called in some countries)?

Extremely cheap (same price category as the examples you provide), but with lots of room for expansion.
I use it with 3x Supermicro cse-m35t-1b cages:

Never regretted it!

You said MicroCenter and I saw the NZXT in the latest ad. Also, I prefer the plain look of the NZXT as well. No real technical reason. I prefer my Lian-Li PC-Q08 to either of them Smile.

Actually, i'm not ordering them from newegg. I'm gonna go to Microcenter. they have Z9 for $25 and NZXT for $28. but your case looks sweet lol

and another thought.. i own http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811517004 for my PC.. maybe i should use this AZZA 1000 for the server and get another case for myself lol

How much do those drives each cost?
Isn't the ECC ram also a premium?
I only ask since it looks like I'd have to eat peanut butter sandwiches for a long time.

No, don't get a EA-380D!!!

With a media server the most important feature a PSU needs is to be single rail, which the Antec Earthwatts PSUs are not.

I personally think the best PSU in that class for the job is this:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371029

Single rail, is made by Seasonic and sold by Antec. Win, win, win. I have had one in an Unraid server for almost two years.

What is the 'single rail' ? I don't know too much about PSU's.. but i have this laying around: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817152028

I was just going to use this psu

RE: Case for unraid server.. - Beer40oz - 2012-06-02

GortWillSaveUs drive cages like that are up to $100 bucks each..... they look cool but is it really worth it?

That is a dual-rail PSU that could probably easily power 12 drives.
