The 4od website itself may use port 443, but RTMP streams are coming over 1935, so there's no way that the plugin can use 443 to stream the videos.

I read what you say but that does not explain what I see in practice.
I have 2 gateways on my network, one to the router and internet and one to a virtual machine running windows 7 and using ICS to share a vpn that runs over the other network to the internet (uk)
If I set the gateway and dns of a pc to the vm then the pc thinks it is in the uk. If I run this website it reports both 1935 ports blocked but 4od, iplayer, & itv player all work and if I look with netstat it reports them to be using port 443. Furthermore, the builtin apps of my Samsung TVs also work perfectly when connected over this gateway.
Similarly, the BBC xbmc app will only work when connected over HTTP.
Could it be that the "official apps" are trying to establish a connection over port 1935 and when this fails they fallback to port 443?
Could you add the same HTTP option to the 4OD as the BBC xbmc has?

Is there any code sharing between the writers of ITV Player, C5 Player and yourself? Ideally this should go into all of the players to give them the best chance of working in as many setups as possible.

v3.10 released with the option to use 443 for the RTMP port.
dlake02 may have copied some of my code for ITV Player and Demand 5, I haven't looked at that code recently, and how much is shared between those two plugins is up to him. There are benefits to re-using code, but that in itself isn't enough to keep the code working, for example Demand 5 is cannot be made to work in XBMC at the moment.

Your log shows that the plugin is using the alternative port 443 for the RTMP stream. That may be the cause of the problem. Either you deliberately turned on the "Use the alternative port... " option, or there is a bug in the plugin in which case a debug log (see first post) may shed light on the situation, although my tests have not produced that particular bug.

I've tried this using the alternative port 443 and the default port. both result in the same issue.
However, turning off tunlr instantly resolves the issue. I've found posts from other people via google who have also reported having issues like this one when using a vpn (expat shield).

I thought that "Stopped working with Expat Shield running" meant "Was working before with Expat Shield running but has now stopped working with Expat Shield running". My mistake.

Tried with older versions, that worked before and I'm having the same issues there.

Sounds like you should take this up with Expat Shield. If they can get http://ps3.channel4.com working in a browser then it should work in the plugin too.

I have done some research and tinkering about this issue and this is what I found and what I have done:
You might have guessed, it's related to the VPN itself. I did read this also happens when using a proxy. I believe only system wide proxy settings cause this problem same for VPN settings but I'd need someone to confirm this since I haven't actually do more research about whether it works with the proxy settings in the add on. Accessing http://ps3.channel4.com/ while connected to Tunlr works just fine.
On windows I got around using an updated librtmp/rtmpdump which is version 2.5 to stream 4oD programs while connected to Tunlr. I didn't come around to try this yet on my TV-PC which runs linux.
I've found it on some russian website after quite some digging through forums. For Ubuntu/XBMCbuntu there is a ppa which has librtmp/rtmpdump 2.5 precompiled but like I said, I still need to do some testing on linux.
