Fanless Build Design Review - argoth - 2012-06-16

I started putting this together with the goal of a fan-less HTPC build. I'd like to be able to run XBMC and MythTV on it. I picked the components below but I wanted a little feedback as I have a few questions that I thought someone might be able to answer:
  • Will it be able to render XBMC smoothly? I've seen some people saying the integrated Intel HD Graphics 3000 works great with XBMC and some saying it doesn't work at all. Based on the stats I've seen I'm inclined to think it should work fine...
  • Is it going to generate too much heat for the passive cooling? According to the case specs the processor should be fine but will adding in the TV Tuner generate too much heat?
  • Is it going to try and pull too much power? This is the one that I don't really know. Based on what I've calculated I think it will be OK but it's cutting it close.
  • And, of course, any other comments you guys have!

Ok, The i3 Intel HD Graphics 3000 Graphics had an issue with BR playback. Google "i3 24p issue". It can cause a shutter but they may have worked it out. I had one and didn't even notice the issue. That case looks interesting, hope it works for ya. Let us know.

You really only need 4 Gb ram and 32 Gb SSD unless you plan on doing some graphic design or video editing, or need a lot of software for some other reason.

Be very cearful which motherboard you choose, that heatsink block looks fixed in the case which means it may not line up with certain motherboards. There is a compatibility list on the site and there are no ASRock boards listed.

RE: Fanless Build Design Review - bossanova808 - 2012-06-17

Yeah I made the mobo mistake in a way, got it to fit but had to bend the pipes a little, not too easy....and not ideal.

You want the RAM and 24pin power thing to be either opposite the ports (i.e. at the back, or looking at it that way (ie towrds the ports) - or on the left. Because you need a clear path to the right for the pipes.

Unless your TV tuner eats power you should romp it in I'd say, and my Streacom (with A6-3500) - runs at about 33ish typically, so there shouldn't be a heat issue from just a tv tuner either. I haven't used many tuners but all I have are stone cold in operation so I can't see it being an issue.

Not quite the same build but probably useful info:

RE: Fanless Build Design Review - argoth - 2012-06-17

Thanks for the feedback!

I don't know how I managed to pick that motherboard, I was so careful making sure the motherboards I was looking were on the compatibility list... I think I got a row messed up my spreadsheet...

Somehow, I managed to miss the fact that Intel didn't fix the 24p issue in the new revision; I thought it was limited to the 2000 series... Ah well, this just means I have to use my AMD build.

This is starting to look similar bossanova808's build (that is a very useful reference!):
Motherboard: ZOTAC A75 WiFi [A75ITX-A-E] ($152.50 @ eBay)
Processor: AMD A6-3500 ($69.99 @ Amazon)
-------------Everything else is the same----------------
Memory: G.Skill Sniper Low Voltage Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($51.99 @ Newegg)
Hard Drive: Sandisk Extreme 120GB 2.5" Solid State Disk ($109.95 @ Adorama)
Blue-Ray Drive: SATA Interface DVDRW ±4X SATA Slot-load Blu-Ray Standard CD DVD BD BC-5600S ($29.99)
Case: Streacom FC8 Fanless Chassis ($181.50)
TV Tuner: Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-2250 Dual TV Tuner w/ MPEG-2 Encoder PCI-E x1 - OEM ($94.99)
PSU: PW-200-M, 200w output, 12v input DC-DC Power Supply, optional P4-ATX Cable ($49.95)
Total: $740.86

i3-2125 and F8 are excellent choice......if it is me, I'll combine it with "Intel DH67CFB3 and Corsair XMS3"..........

You can configures your i3 as below-

1. Install the latest Intel driver- Check your system for the latest updates
2. Install- Intel Management Engine Interface Driver]Intel Magagement Engine Interface Driver
3. Disable DXVA2 and everything else in XBMC settings/video/playback
4. Disable "Use a fullscreen window rather than true fullscreen" in XBMC settings/system/video output
5. Turn off UAC "Disable User Account Control (UAC) in Windows 7"

You should be able to playback blu-ray 1080P video and bitstreaming DTS-HD/TrueHD audio fluently.......you'll enjoy it!

Nothing is perfect.....if you are worry about 24p, you need to check out this thread- Let's set this straight - No one can do 24p consistently well ..........

but INTEL fails to be better at it then AMD
since i've yet to see a AMD 24p complaint
where i saw INTEL 24p complaints all over the web!!

Not me.....with the settings above, it works fine with i5-2400!

If you read the entire posts, there are un-happy users for all brands......

Here is a good article on it- Llano vs. Sandy Bridge: HTPC Performance......

RE: Fanless Build Design Review - markus625 - 2012-06-17

Would'nt mind building a similar system my self maybe a Streacom FC5, but id like the system to handle games such as Battlefield 3 also, not sure if a 200w Psu would handle a Graphics card that could play it.
Maybe a Amd Radeon hd 7750 coupled with a core I3 ive bridge

Also dont know if a add-on graphics card would work with the intel integrated graphics to boost the gpu performance.

200w PSU should be enough for AMD HD6570 (50W)+Intel i3-2125 (65W)..........Battlefield 3 on HD6570 2gb Part 1/3

For sure, you'll have stronger HTPC.....

RE: Fanless Build Design Review - poofyhairguy - 2012-06-17

An add on card fixes every Intel. Get like a GT 520 or a AMD 6450.

RE: Fanless Build Design Review - markus625 - 2012-06-17

Dont know if that graphics card beit a 7750 or 6570 would build up some heat in that FC5 OD Chassis, would be a great idea to incorporate a passive cooler like the one for the cpu.

RE: Fanless Build Design Review - markus625 - 2012-06-18

What id like is to get a FC8 Chassis and modify if so it can accommodate a pci express graphics card ie the Amd Radeon HD 7750 is only 170mm long , this could be mounted above the motherboard via riser card/ribbon, also it could be possible able to mount a hot swappable 2.5 hdd via hdd cage.

Now that Amd Trinity is about to hit the market with AMD Radeon HD 7560D Graphics the graphics card might not even be needed.

RE: Fanless Build Design Review - markus625 - 2012-06-19

Ive started ordering my components for the FC8 build, got the fc8 coming today and a A8-3820 coming from ebay for about £60.

Having looked on other theards related to the FC8 and FC5, it appears that the FC8 only comes with two copper heatpipes and in the one build ive read the cpu touches 70c which is amd's maximum heat for this cpu.
Im looking at buying 4 more heatpipes from Conrads which should bring the cpu temperature down to 10-15c

By the way the heatpipes are 6mm x 250mm
