*READ THIS 1st BEFORE POSTING* FAQs, troubleshooting, and more. - Ned Scott - 2012-06-17

NOTE: This thread is *NOT* for troubleshooting. The aim of this thread is to be informative. The thread will be left open for constructive suggestions for the FAQs/wiki/etc.

Read the forum rules: here

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
XBMC all platforms FAQ (wiki)
FAQ that applies to all versions of XBMC.

XBMC for Windows specific FAQ (wiki)
Windows OS specific FAQ.

BEFORE POSTING, PLEASE LOOK OVER THE FAQs FIRST.

HOW-TO GET HELP:
HOW-TO post about a problem or ask for help in a useful manner (AKA YOU MUST POST XBMC.LOG SO WE CAN HELP)
Again, be sure to read over the FAQ before posting to make sure your question/issue isn't answered there.

NIGHTLY & MONTHLY BUILDS:
These are unstable pre-release builds and are not for the faint of heart. Expect there to be bugs! If you have issues and want to post about them/get help then you MUST include debug logs, etc.

Nightly builds:
http://mirrors.xbmc.org/nightlies/win32/

Monthly snapshots:
Monthly snapshot builds are also available that are more stable than Nightly builds, but may still contain bugs and evolving features:
http://mirrors.xbmc.org/snapshots/win32/

As always, be sure to backup your userdata (wiki) folder regularly when playing with nightlies or monthlies.

You should be able to go back to stable XBMC v12 by installing over the nightly build, just as you would for an update, as long as you don't delete the older library DBs in your userdata folder. This may not always be true, so backup your userdata folder or consider running the nightly build in portable mode.

If you have a general XBMC question that isn't specific to Windows then you might want to post it in XBMC General Help and Support. See also Skin Specific Help and Support and Add-ons Help and Support. If you are not sure where to post then feel free to post the question here and someone can move your thread later if needed.

Be kind, be patient, and enjoy XBMC and our support community!

The following is discussion about how to improve the FAQ/Wiki pages:

Just reformatted and slightly updated the Windows FAQ wiki page. Most of it comes from the old wiki page, so if anything doesn't apply anymore, or if you feel anything is missing, feel free to add it or mention it in this thread.

Have a copy of the "forum usage guidelines" to update the link at http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=Forum_FAQ ?

Maybe point out that with DB changes with nightlies it's not always the case you can re-install over the top and all goes back to how it was....a link to how to use portable mode with the nightlies might be useful...

That reminds me, we haven't had a working forum rules page in months.

Should the instructions for "how to post a problem" (http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=42708) be updated? I was looking into a problem I just posted and ran into a discussion (http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=158442) where it is stated we should "always use http://xbmclogs.com/" for posting logs. That site is not listed in the directions above.

It's not that you have to use a specific site, but rather that you should always use a paste site and not paste logs directly into post.
