Play separate, demuxed audio stream? - quaternio - 2012-08-03

I have a video file with a separate, demuxed audio file. Is it possible to select this separate audio stream (ac3) without having to remux it back into the container?

I do not need to play two audio streams at once, I just want to select a demuxed stream rather than one of the muxed audio streams. I've already (unsuccessfully) tried renaming the file and placing it in the same directory, both leaving the original ".ac3" extension and changing it to ".conf" (the latter of which apparently works for mplayer, or so I've read).

Thanks in advance
