RE: Intel NUC - HTPC possibilities - regnets - 2013-08-29

Hi,

i would like to know, if someone possesses both the i3 and the celeron version of the nuc. Which one has a lower idle power comsumption.

Thank you

Could never find a direct comparison but if these help:

What is your CPU utilization during playback? My temps usually drop during playback since XBMC & Theme use more CPU than playback (on my system: W8 & Aeon Nox, playback is under 10% CPU).

Does your NUC kick the cooling fan onto High during playback then? Before going fanless, mine would only go into loud fan mode on the fancier Aeon Nox library screens. In my current case this situation gets me my peak temp of 71C.

Just started using OpenELEC yesterday.. Is there a way to check the temp/usage while playing a video without opening the menu up? Confused
I don't ever hear a fan. BIOS says that it runs around 3000 RPM though...

Here's a pic of it running in the intel BIOS:

FWIW, using a Kill-a-Watt device for measurement my Celeron NUC (OpenELEC, 2x2GB RAM, no SSD installed, no wifi/bluetooth module installed, BIOS v.42 ) draws a flat 1.0W in standby with an IR receiver and 8GB memory stick in the rear USB ports.

RE: Intel NUC - HTPC possibilities - thethirdnut - 2013-08-30

@nathianal - not sure about openelec specifically but Linux has an lm-sensors package that can be used for all temp, fan rpm, etc. Google that for Openelec and then check stats over ssh whilst testing.

Has anyone ever ran "Valley Benchmark" on your NUC?

I have Win8 64 and when I ran it, temps ran from 40c to 58c. (i3 NUC)
on an Akasa fanless case... (case is very warm to the touch)

Anyway the Valley Bench only was showing 5.7 fps.
(looks like a good graphics stress test)

Legion

After 1 hour & 20 minutes of Valley Benchmark ...
Core #0 = 65c
Core #1 = 69c
Package = 69c

It's be nice to see someone run the Valley Benchmark using a std. case w/ i3, and then someone with the Impactics and Tranquil cases.
then post the temps

the program is free:

I removed the wifi card from my NUC (I should have probably mentioned it before.. it slipped my mind) and the unit runs about 10-13c cooler now...idling
Averaging at about 60c now idling.. Hitting about 72c-80c when watching movies.

So not much difference without the wifi I guess. SSH'd into the box and ran lm-sensors:

Not really sure what to think at this point. Should I be concerned that something isn't right or am I worrying about nothing?

Upgrading to OpenELEC 3.1.7 now.

Looks well within tolerances to me!

RE: Intel NUC - HTPC possibilities - Legion455 - 2013-08-31

run the Valley Benchmark and tell me what the temps do running it for an hour, if you have time.

RE: Intel NUC - HTPC possibilities - fritsch - 2013-08-31

OpenELEC 3.1.7 will enable RC6 powersaving for the Celeron NUCs again. Those "recycled" Sandybridge GT1 GPUs in the 847 Celeron had a severe bug before, which caused an evil hang, when running GL apps in combination with that power saving feature.

Your Celeron NUC should be some degrees colder now.

you can verify by
Code:
dmesg | grep -i rc6 | pastebinit

Other NUCs with core i3 (IVB) or Gigaby Bridge (even the celeron is ivy bridge) were never affected.

How about the NUC cases from strea.com

What they done with the power button on that sexy beast??

RTFM, integrated in the grille. Smart!

Still no release date though Sad

RE: Intel NUC - HTPC possibilities - Legion455 - 2013-08-31

Right now, my NUC (Win8 / rc6 mce remote) doesn't seem to want to wake up from sleep,... the blue light blinks on top,... but it won't wake up using the remote,... only if I press the on button will it wake up. ... I changed something, but at the moment, can't seem to figure it out,...
any suggestions?

thanks
