Apple Tv advice... portable HD - robcrouch - 2012-12-28

Hi all, i have recently discovered Xbmc and love it. Currently i store all my movies on a WD portable HD.

I am looking to purchase either an apple tv 1st gen or 2nd gen but would like to know, will i be able to plug my Wd portable HD direct into the apple TV and watch films direct off it through XBMC (so no streaming?)

and if so, which would perform better apple tv 1st gen or apple tv 2nd gen?

Many thanks for any help

ATV1, yes. ATV2, no.

ATV1 (wiki) + BCHD (wiki) + Crystalbuntu (wiki) > ATV2 (wiki)

Normal ATV1 < ATV 2

so, in my case, are there any advantages to buying an apple tv 2? and also can an apple tv 2 be modified to read from a portable hard drive?

If you can find an ATV1 in good condition and are willing to do the BCHD installation then it is a better machine than the ATV1. Also, ATV2s are hard to find and are often being sold for more than they're worth.

An ATV2 cannot directly read from an external drive as it hasn't no USB host ports.

ok so it looks as though ATV 1 with the mods mentioned above would be the best bet for my needs?

thanks guys
