Re: Lenovo Q190 currently best value mini HTPC - Test results & 2 questions - angusc - 2013-10-05

You guys don't know how lucky you all are........ I live in Beijing, China and read how good this unit is so went off to buy one from the local PC shops. The actual retail price from Lenovo China is equivalent to USD$572 (£356)......and that's Win 8, 500gb with 4mb ram!

On the Chinese website "Taobao" you can get a Linux based version with 500gb with 2mb ram for USD$327 (£203).

So I had to walk away disappointed.....Will wait until I go back to the UK in December to get it.

Despite what most people think about China, I can tell you that they may make just about everything on the market these days, but the products are not readily available on the local China markets and where they are they are never cheaper than overseas.

You won't find many left if at all by December. It's EOL.

They would come up with a new model having haswell. This is supposed to be their best selling model.

I installed an ssd drive in my Q190, made it a lot snappier
it has only 1 ram slot and its very easy to take apart.

Did you time the boot up with windows using the HDD vs the SSD. I would like to know.

I upgraded the RAM in mine. However I have been running OpenElec for many months now from a USB pen drive.

It boots to XBMC in about 10 seconds so no need for an SSD!

Just curious why you would want to shutdown as opposed to suspend while running windows.

HDMI handshakes, incorrect resolutions upon resume, system hangs, won't reconnect to network correctly or it does but won't access network shares.

All of those are why I never make Windows go to sleep! Full off for me!

Blue solved by using xbmclauncher with option to close xbmc on suspend and run on resume. Green solved by running on resume cmd remapping network drives. Win7x64 Q190.
But yeah, suspend/resume on Windows is problematic but solvable.

Fair enough. I started it on windows around xbmc 10. Quickly moved to xbmclive then onto openELEC and it serves me perfectly.

Anyone with a q190 tried openelec? i tried it a number of times and every time my external USB drive (1 TB full of movies) started freezing and movies were so dark they were almost unwatchable.
Ubuntu stable with XBMC works better for me, no freezing and the movies look great.

I read most of the 45 pages of the thread and I'm nearly ready to place my order. I currently have a BoxeeBox and I'm looking for an upgrade to make the menus and browsing snappier! I have a 450 movies collection and the thumbnails takes wait too long to load for my taste.

Here are my needs :
- I want a VERY fast booting solution, with a VERY fast loading time of the thumbnails from my collection (450 movies / 30 shows / 600+episodes / 100gb music)
- Ability to On / Off using a remote.

Would a Q190 1017U celeron running OpenElec be enough for that?

Would installing a good SSD accelerate the load time of the thumbnails and fanart?
If I plan on also running Windows 8, should I install a 64gb or a 128gb SSD drive?

Thanks!

I would first use the hard drive instead of jumping on to SSD. Particularly for openelec not sure if there would be any significant difference with the boot time.

You could do on/off from any sleep states but can't from shutdown.
