RE: Lenovo Q190 currently best value mini HTPC - Test results & 2 questions - noggin - 2013-04-03

Can't see it at the moment, but EBuyer (I think) had the Celeron Q190 for £199 with FreeDOS instead of Windows (ideal for an OpenElec install to avoid the Windows tax).

Can't see the FreeDOS version at all and it seems Amazon are the only place I can find selling it in the UK at the moment.

£249 - ( http://www.amazon.co.uk/Lenovo-VE74AUK-Ultra-Factor-Desktop/dp/B00AXYAXU0/ref=sr_1_1?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1365064665&sr=1-1&keywords=Lenovo+Q190 )

That's as cheap as I can find it at the moment and is what I paid for it.

Brilliant little box though!

I've just ordered that same box Big Grin Hopefully it'll be here in the next few days.

Could some kind person tell me which version of OpenElec 3.0.0 I need to download (there's a few on the webiste for different machines) and put on a USB stick, and also tell me the exact BIOS settings to get it to boot from the USB (noticed people having problems earlier in the thread)?

Sorry for all the questions but can't wait to get started (and get my ATV2 on Ebay Big Grin).

Any particular reason you want to go openelec? I'm running xbmc on the pre-installed windows install with no issue, and you can then use speedfan to control the fan speed.

I thought if I used openelec, then it would be more user friendly (for the mrs and kids) - think they'd prefer to just turn something on with a remote and it boots straight into xbmc.

I'm not very tech savvy, but they're worse than me Big Grin

RE: Lenovo Q190 currently best value mini HTPC - Test results & 2 questions - leandrogales - 2013-04-05

So , what would be the best build for XBMC, a lot of 1080p content, 3D (problably just side-by-side), i would like netflix too, but i can run it on the smart tv, so no problem if boot directly into XBMC.
So, would it be the (http://ow.ly/1uwtfu) eSkRo's Builds, the Q190 or the zotac box?

RE: Lenovo Q190 currently best value mini HTPC - Test results & 2 questions - noggin - 2013-04-05

For those in the UK, the non-Windows 8 (it comes with FreeDOS) Celeron version is back up for pre-order at Ebuyer for £199. http://www.ebuyer.com/482910-lenovo-ideacentre-q190-nettop-57315414

4GB RAM and 1TB Hard drive with Celeron 887

Fair enough, however I have my box booting into XBMC with no issue on Windows. I never turn it off though, so not sure how well it will turn on from remote, but I imagine it wouldn't be tricky to setup. Smile

Never turn it off!Big Grin Think even that would work with my mrsBig Grin

Does it not get hot and noisy (even with fan control)?

Do you use a remote with your setup, if so was it easy enough to set up?

I'm thinking of buying a cheap windows remote and getting a Logitech Harmony 900 to take over the rest using the cheap IR Receiver. Big Grin

It is very power efficient, so turning it off doesn't save you that much.
I've put mine behind my TV so it is out of sight, what your wife can't see, she may not notice Wink

The fan runs at a constant speed, so leaving it on for a long time wont make in any noisier. (in fact i've had no issue stepping the fan down to 3k over the past few days, so i'm going to drop it to 2k to get it completely silent and see what happens)

I have this remote
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Windows-Control-Infrared-Receiver-Ultimate/dp/B003ZV3J72/ref=pd_sxp_grid_pt_0_0
Which has a very handy mouse control pad on it if I need it. However most of the time I use a Harmony 755 remote with that IR receiver. Took a little bit of setting up in XBMC, but all the instructions for setting up a media remote are online somewhere. Can't recall how to do it off the top of my head, but I think I had to swap a couple of the button assignments to get it perfect. I've never needed to touch those settings again, so I have conveniently forgotten Smile

Thanks trooper. You've been more than helpful Big Grin May try the leaving it on method like you do, and the hiding it method (like you doWink).

That's the exact same remote that i've ordered, so hopefully a bit of googling will see me right with setting up the Harmony Smile

One last question if I may. If you were to switch your PC off, would it boot straight into XBMC on restart or is it a case of running it from the start menu? (also been reading up on EventGhost & SilentLaunch - so the goalposts keep moving Big Grin)

RE: Lenovo Q190 currently best value mini HTPC - Test results & 2 questions - Trooperlooper - 2013-04-05

I've dropped a link to XBMC into the startup folder of windows, so it boots into windows, then automatically loads XBMC with no input needed from the user.

Thanks Trooper.

You'll have to let me know how you get on dropping the fan speed to 2k.

I'll be putting my ATV2 on ebay next week (hopefully) to try and recover some of the cost of this enterprise Cool

Ordered one of these today for the bedroom, cant wait for it to arrive and try live and openelec, but the only thing Im concerned about is that there are issues with the Wifi driver at the moment on Linux
