Looks like AMD and others are doing a lot of work with the open driver, I think it was well over 100 separate patches going in to kernel 3.10.
Not to mention all power management related patches in kernel 3.11, also lesser CPU usage on audio decode, new oss Radeon employee, Marek Olšák, complete updated oss dev tools, opening uvd (possible vdpau), openGL4.3 drivers, their new console customers.

This time, it's easy to see that AMD is really committed in bringing their infrastructure to a level to execute their strategy (run as much as possible on the GPU and let a few ARM/x86 CPU's be an assistant of this GPU: Lego SoC with GPU as a its' main part) and xbmc users will benefit.

The fglrx drivers never were crap for normal end-users: video playback is great.
What a big problem was/is with fglrx / xvba, are those breakages with every new driver: Kernel, X.org, MESA, OpenGL, you could directly see your setup breaking. So frustrating for devs and people compiling straight from GIT.

Now with all the positive reports about using OSS Radeon & VDPAU stuff, it's almost time for a true OSS HTPC.

All those developments have let to a PR with VDPAU support for XBMC. This means all AMD driver limitations are gone and AMD will give you a pure OSS HTPC.

With Mantle also coming, expect more direct hardware access, bypassing VDPAU/OpenGL for certain stuff: even faster.

This compensates all delays Kabini has...

They start coming:Acer Aspire XC105 AMD E1-2500 /2100

RE: AMD Kabini Boards - Robotica - 2013-10-13

And also mini ITX boards by gigabyte GA-F2A88XN-WIFI (no kabini support yet; probably bios update that gives that) and Asus FM2A88X-ITX.

RE: AMD Kabini Boards - Dougie Fresh - 2013-10-15

Those looks like they'll support Kaveri.

As for Kabini, the ECS KBN-I/5200 AMD A6-5200 is available here now: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813135363

Quite expensive

RE: AMD Kabini Boards - Robotica - 2013-10-15

Let's see how this plays out.

This all is fm2+ socket and then you have the BGA packaged G series and also the lower end E series which seem to have FS1B socket.

It's funny what's considered "expensive" these days. $140 for a quad-core CPU and GPU all-in-one package seems good to me.

OK...Comparing the above to G1610 @ $43 and a ECS H61H2-I @ $52 that I just built as a HTPC (no 3D for me) and which runs really good for me, Is it worth the $45 price hike?

I want to build another and weighing my options. I guess the video is the major difference?

RE: AMD Kabini Boards - Dougie Fresh - 2013-10-16

You *should* be able to run some games on the A6-5200, after all Kabini is what's supposed to drive the PS4. I am not sure about 3D. I'd like to see a A6-5200 board with on-board DC power, i.e. the kind you plug an AC adapter right into.

And don't forget that you live in the usa, you can get it for $140 but i think 140 pounds/euros is not so cheap for this MB.

dual core fanless Kabini, TDP should be 9W. Perfect HTPC mobo? Looking forward to the Brix version, if there will be one...

It's weaker than the E-350 so Windows is out but OpenELEC would be fine as long as you don't want HD audio bitstreaming support.

RE: AMD Kabini Boards - trent33 - 2013-10-19

Why is windows out? They're selling Win 8 laptops with E1-2100 kabinis. Not saying it will blow your socks off, but it should work, right? Smile Not sure this is much more inferior than a Celeron 847, which can also run Windows AFAIK...but you're the expert. Thoughts?

Edit: looks like the c847 kills this kabini, almost 2x passmark score.

Weaker? :o What is the difference in cpu power?
