DTS Audio passthrough via HDMI on Philips TV - Kitebuggy - 2013-11-20

Hi all

Does anyone know about the issue that Philips TVs will not passthrough the DTS signal?

My setup is: XMBC is connected via HDMI to TV, TV ist connectied via digital coax (SPDIF) to AV Reveicer.
XBMC Audio Setup is configured to passthrough and Receicer is DTS capable.

With this setup i get no sound on films with DTS, even my receiver is DTS capable.

Is it really an issue with the Philips TV? Unfortunately my XBMC hardware (RPi and Aopen HTPC) doesn't have any digital audio output
to be connected directly to the AV receiver.

Yes it's pretty standard for TV's not to pass through 5.1 surround sound formats from an external source, although there are some top of range TV's that do allow it. Careful study of the spec's is required if it's a must have feature for the TV, as even if either Dolby Digital or DTS is listed as supported it will still generally only be from the TV's internal tuners or via the DLNA/media player app if a smart TV.

You can have XBMC decode the audio so it can be sent via the TV but you'll be limited to stereo 2.0 sound only.

The other alternative if you want to retain 5.1 is oneof the HDMI audio extrators or a HDMI switches that includes an digital SPDIF out, something like http://www.amazon.com/ViewHD-Premium-Audio-Extractor-Converter/dp/B00AHS8LD8/ref=pd_sim_sbs_e_5

Thanks for your advice.
I will check the HDMI audio extractor.

At the end i have to think about a new AV Receiver with HDMI to pass the Audio and Video signal through Big Grin

Philips TVs have DTS support for file playback as of 2013. Does your model type end with 08? (like 55PFL6008)
On HDMI however it is not supported.

Also be sure to update the software on tour TV. mine is supporting DTS (42PFL3405H/12)

A lot of TVs can output DD/AC3 and DTS from the internal TV tuner (and they would put that as a marketing bullet point), but very few actually can passthrough DD/AC3 and DTS that they get in through HDMI or S/PDIF

Wow, even my cheap Insignia TV can do DD5.1 pass through, specifically has a 'RAW' mode for the TOSLINK output even. :O

Just for the record:
Most of Philips TVs as of 2014 have DTS core codec passthrough from their HDMI inputs now.

A simple answer to this is to run separate audio and video cable from your KODI box.

On my setup I have the KODI PC connected to TV by HDMI. But a separate Optical SPDIF cable connected from PC to AV Amp to handle the DTS and 5.1 Dolby audio signals. This setup means my amp happily recognises the full DTS signal without hassles. I just turn the sound down on the actual TV set to keep the TV's built in speakers silent.

What are your settings in Kodi for that?

Who are you asking? If me, I can dig out the detailed posts with images I have made on this before.

If you wanted to know how I connect HDMI to the TV for images, and SPDIF to the Amp for Audio read this post

That shows my whole setup. PC and KODI.
