Video tearing on Nightly/Maverick - FlangeMonkey - 2014-01-31

Hi Guys,

I've started to experience video tearing on the nightly build. VLC playback is fine, I've done all the usual vsync/hsync checks, hardware acceleration, etc. with no effect.

I think this started when I upgraded my Mac Mini to Maverick 10.9.1.

Any idea's? it doesn't appear to be common, from my searches.

Thanks,

Some progress...

I've removed my XBMC userdata etc. and had XBMC recreate them. This appears to have resolved my issues, nothing has really changed as settings go in the GUI, however I now appear to have a slight delay in the audio.

Additionally I copied my old AdvancedSettings.xml, so I know it's not something in that.

Tearing is almost always due to vsync being disabled (assuming that it's actually tearing, and not something else).

RE: Video tearing on Nightly/Maverick - FlangeMonkey - 2014-02-04

The above hasn't resolved my issues.

What else can it be?

After further testing, 'Vertical blank sync' helps but I still experience tearing. Like I say its been ok before and something, such as Maverick or the instant upgrade of XBMC to resolve Maverick issues has coursed it.

So I've captured some debug logs and get the following:

21:55:00 T:4722294784 DEBUG: CPullupCorrection: pattern lost on diff 43000.000000
21:55:05 T:4722294784 DEBUG: CPullupCorrection: detected pattern of length 1: 41708.33, frameduration: 41708.333333

21:57:01 T:4722294784 DEBUG: CPullupCorrection: detected pattern of length 1: 41708.33, frameduration: 41708.333333

I'm going to search around to find a little more out, however does anyone know what this means?

Edit: I think this might be a red herring, I've done a bunch more testing and it appears to be full screen mode that courses it.

I've experienced the same issues as well on every Gotham nightly I have used on the latest Mavericks 10.9.1. It appears that the Vertical Blank Sync option doesn't fully work.

The only reason I'm using nightlies is because the HDMI sound broke in Frodo after I updated to Mavericks. (the mini loses HDMI sync which causes video stuttering until you toggle a sound option in the XBMC settings.)

Honestly, I wish I had never updated to Mavericks.

Any solutions? Ironically, in the interim, I'm now using a $35 Raspberry Pi which runs XBMC perfectly!

Well, not just 30 minutes ago, I finished the drastic measure of downgrading back to 10.6.8 and on first appearences it looks ok, although I though it was resolved once before. Due to this I need to do more testing with different media, but even the refresh rates looks better for some reason... I'll keep you posted and my fingers crossed.

Some other addition observations:

Soon after the issue started, I begun connecting with VNC on 10.9.1. I found out not long ago, while connected with XBMC running, the tearing stopped, but the mouse inputs where insanely laggy. On 10.6.8, the inputs are much smoother.

I did some other research and it appears 10.9 has upgraded OpenGL (to 4.1) and OpenCL (1.2). I'm unsure if this has made any differences, but I also looked down the route of the Nvidia Drivers, which I've found lots of complaints about in 10.9. Interestingly my MacBook Pro on Sandy Bridge works without issues when outputting to the same TV, this isn't Nvidia.

Other information on the forum also suggests that 10.6.8 is the lightest and reference for XBMC, so this is another reason why I took the route to downgrade back to 10.6.8. I think the Mini will be more happy!

Edit: I don't think the Vertical Block Sync isn't working. It appears differently in my eyes, so I think its something else coursing it.

Edit: After more testing, I can confirm, the downgrade to 10.6.8 doesn't have this issue!

Any further updates on this issue which will fix the video tearing in Gotham on OSX 10.9??

I wonder if the video developer on Gotham is aware of this video issue in OSX 10.9?

RE: Video tearing on Nightly/Maverick - Memphiz - 2014-03-04

I can't confirm the issue (running macmini late 2012 and 10.9.1) - any more confirmers here?

RE: Video tearing on Nightly/Maverick - FlangeMonkey - 2014-03-04

I'm on mid 2010 (Mac Mini 4.1) which runs a Nvidia GeForce 320M and have the issue.

Can anyone confirm with a mid 2011?

I too have tearing with 2010 Mini (Geforce 320M) and Mavericks. Snow Leopard seems ok, haven't noticed any problems in 2 days now. Vsync is naturally enabled.

RE: Video tearing on Nightly/Maverick - FlangeMonkey - 2014-03-04

Hey SpaceMonkey, did you upgrade to 10.9.2?

RE: Video tearing on Nightly/Maverick - User 34959 - 2014-03-04

Yes but tearing happened with all 10.9.x releases. 10.9.1 and 10.9.2 for sure and with 95% certainty in 10.9 too.

RE: Video tearing on Nightly/Maverick - Memphiz - 2014-03-04

Anyone seeing it with AMD or Intel GPU?

RE: Video tearing on Nightly/Maverick - noone - 2014-03-04

I also have the mid 2010 Mac mini with the Nvidia 320M.
