What is the difference in the versions of xbmc?

You only really have "old versions", "the current version" and "future versions", so it's the same as with any other software - bug fixes and features, really.
12.x - Frodo - is current, with 12.3 being the specific current version. 13.x - Gotham - is in Alpha testing now. References to Eden, Dharma and similar are then old versions.

Something for that http://trac.xbmc.org/roadmap give the OP an IDE how older versions would be less featured etc.
