Is xbmc useful for me? - pgr! - 2014-03-27
I have a little i7 based wheezy debian home server and a flat screen tv near it (but not connected atm). I wonder, if it's a useful scenario for xmbc to install it on my home server as a background service and connect the tv to it via HDMI so that I can select movies from a local (or remote) folder. As the server has no keyboard or mouse, I would use my tv's remote control.
The server has no X11, GNOME, KDE installed. I hope, no desktop is needed to run xmbc.

assuming its a modern i7 with a decent integrated gpu, It should be possible, just fallow the Linux guide HOW-TO:Install XBMC for Linux (wiki), I'm not sure if intel iGPUs can do CEC so im not sure about the remote, if you mean by IR then a simple flirc adapter could work. You may need xorg, I think xbmc can render directly with openGL but im pretty sure that OpenGL need xorg, but there is no need for a desktop environment.

XBMC for Linux assumes there is a window manager like X11.
