HD from DVB-T2 "surround sound" - thermionic - 2014-03-31

MediaPortal 1.5 (server only) with DVB T2 card
crystalbuntu 14.0 ALPHA1 Git:20140307-f3dde3e
MediaPortal PVR client 1.9.11
Onkyo TX-NR509 receiver

I recorded Dr Who on BBC 3 HD yesterday

If I play it on my crystalbuntu ATV1, I don't get any dialogue, just the music, or if I select it, the "Visual impaired commentary" if I play it on MPC-HC, I get the dialogue as well (or the "Visual impaired commentary" if I select it).

If I bring up the properties in MPC-HC I get the below

I was going to post this in the MediaPortal PVR support forum, but then I tried just playing the .ts file and had exactly the same issue, so it looks like XBMC rather than the PVR plugin

Hint: http://forum.stmlabs.com/forumdisplay.php?fid=3

and for the future: No help without proper Debug Log

RE: HD from DVB-T2 "surround sound" - Ned Scott - 2014-03-31

No dialogue sounds like an issue with 5.1 (or higher) audio tracks, but your media info says it just has stereo tracks. Can you cut off a small sample of that ts file and put it up on dropbox or something, so that others can test it as well?

RE: HD from DVB-T2 "surround sound" - thermionic - 2014-03-31

What tool would you recommend for creating a sample of the .ts file ?

RE: HD from DVB-T2 "surround sound" - Ned Scott - 2014-03-31

Off hand I can't seem to remember what's easy to use, but since this is happening with recordings, I guess just record a few minutes from a show that has the same issue. I'm assuming this is a continuing issue?

RE: HD from DVB-T2 "surround sound" - thermionic - 2014-03-31

I used h264ts_cutter_v111

RE: HD from DVB-T2 "surround sound" - thermionic - 2014-03-31

section of log as per http://xbmclogs.com/show.php?id=162868

RE: HD from DVB-T2 "surround sound" - thermionic - 2014-03-31

bigger log including startup http://xbmclogs.com/show.php?id=162870

RE: HD from DVB-T2 "surround sound" - Ned Scott - 2014-03-31

Yeah, that video has a 5.1 audio track. XBMC sees it as 5.1 as well. The dialog works fine when I play it on my ATV1 with Crystalbuntu, but I don't have an audio receiver hooked up, I just have some analog desktop speakers.

RE: HD from DVB-T2 "surround sound" - thermionic - 2014-03-31

although the log shows a 5.1 track, it shows on screen as 2.0 and if I bring up the audio settings it also shows as Stereo, and is only playing the surround...

I'll update to the latest nightly and see if the problem remains.

RE: HD from DVB-T2 "surround sound" - thermionic - 2014-03-31

updated to latest nightly Git:20140330-a8a90e0) and no improvement :-(

That really looks like a kernel bug in ALSA - if you see what channels you get. Btw. if you only have 2 channels connected, tell that xbmc and set number of channels to 2.0

RE: HD from DVB-T2 "surround sound" - thermionic - 2014-03-31

I'm connected via HDMI with passthrough enabled

If I set XBMC to use 3.0, 3.1, 5.0, 5.1, 7.0 or 7.1 (even though passthrough is enabled), I just get the surround channel(s) as a stereo output, my just sees a stereo feed.

If i set XBMC to use 2.0, 2.1, 4.0 or 4.1, I get the front L&R channels, still only stereo according to my receiver.

My ATV1 is running kernel 3.2.27

RE: HD from DVB-T2 "surround sound" - thermionic - 2014-03-31

If I play the clip through Windows Gotham Berta 3, my receiver sees the multi channel audio.

I suppose I should try to see what output I get on 12.3 on the ATV1, unless anyone has any other suggestions...

RE: HD from DVB-T2 "surround sound" - fritsch - 2014-03-31

I already told about the kernel bug.

Kernel 3.2 is more than 2 years old, btw.
