Search-field on the home screen using the Confluence skin - WebMaximus - 2014-04-15
Sometimes I have the search option seen in the attached picture and sometimes I don't have it. I've been trying to find out where I can set if it should be shown or not but haven't found where to set that or what it is determing if it will be shown or not.
Is it just me being blind or where do I set this?

Confluence search box is conditional to the existence of the GlobalSearch addon.
Just install this addon and it will appear.
