There is no v0.9.8 hosted. The latest version is still v0.9.7. Looks as if Hitcher had forgotten to upload it or has problems in this regard.
Just be patient. Hitcher will be take care of it

I have a problem to see the difference between selected and non selected text.
I have to switch between them to actually see the difference. Is this something on my side, and is there a way I can change the color/intensity of the selected text?

You can change the colours in skin.conq\colors\Default.xml - but be aware, that you'll have to do it after every update. To avoid this, edit the colors in the file default.xml, save as NameOfMyColours.xml and chose your colors in the settings (Appearence/Skin/-Colours).
Chosing (or making) a slightly darker background picture also helps. The background jpg-files are in skin.conq\extras\backgrounds

Any possibility of adding an option to switch the watched/unwatched icons? I'd like to have unwatched be marked and watched be unmarked. Trying to dabble in the editing it myself but have no idea what I'm doing.

Same problem for me with a fresh install of XBMCbuntu with XBMC 13.0.
My graphic card is an AMD Fusion...
What de you exactly mean when you said "Could be a limited RGB thing?" ?

Have you checked your colour temperature isn't too high resulting in blueish whites?
