PCH C-200 that was Q1 2010 and the Pi compares good to it for what it costs.... I'll grant you that one instantly.

However 4 and a half years down the road... on Sigma8911 based box.. for me a Pi is not an option with regards to Video and Audio quality..... it doesn't cut the mustard.

But lets discuss this somewhere else like on the openhour or popcornhour forum and feel free to convince everyone there...
Again most of us don't have these boxes for the UI but for the playback of our content no compromising on that..
5 minutes on a slick UI does not weigh up to 2 hours of suboptimal viewing.

I don't bother with it except to test the hardware decoded hevc playback capability which has already been fleshed out.

Apart from that one feature everything seems as it was with the alpha used as base. Please post if you notice any other hidden attributes we may have missed.

I tested it last night. It was not good enough for my exact needs.
for me the Gotham version 13.0 release data 05.05 is the best apk file so fare. it work great with 1080p and also my device box comes with this apk as standard.
all the newer once drops a lot of frames during fast movements. But this version is great! not sure why its only 13.0. I guess everyone have their preference.

Ah.... but the UI together with all the functions the XBMC library bring completely destroy all that "video and audio quality" with regard to Popcorn Hour. Lets not forget the black screen I got every time I tried to play a Hi10p video. I have 3 PCH 300's collecting dust as I can't ever imagine watching video the "old fashioned way". The YAMJ add-on although brilliant, was hard to maintain and too many hours, days and weekends to mess with. With XMBX/KODI everything is automatic and my episodes are presented in such a way I know which one to watch next. I would rather use a low powered marginally acceptable Pi to the top of the line PH. (which was IMHO the PHC300) as the flash based units are altogether painful.

So there you have it.. no need to go to the NMT forum ... if it still exists.

What I find confusing is that you bang on about video/audio quality, yet you champion an Android device that can only do 30/60Hz. Until Android-L, if Android-L comes with the promised features, any Android-based device is going to have "suboptimal" video compared to even a Pi.

I will refrain from getting into a pissing match with the Moderator of the NMT forums (Willem53)... Just to qualify I owned several 100's and 200's as well. Beta tested your stuff for a few years also. As the first device to playback MKV files my hat is off to Syabas... But thats the past. Lets bury the Popcorn Hour with all the honors it deserved.

Having tested 2 of the modded XBMC's, even though they played 720p Tears of Steel, the 1080p version (http://trailers.divx.com/hevc/TearsOfSteelFull12min_1080p_24fps_27qp_1474kbps_GPSNR_42.29_HM11.mkv) would not play without having half of the screen turn green.

The latest Helix Alpha nightly build did play the 1080p version and although not perfect, it was watchable, so it shows how well Kodi is coming along.

It also played all of the test files that I had been using to evaluate the Tronsmart R28 flawlessly, where the modded builds struggled with even some of the more basic files.

What I did notice in Kodi that I had not seen before, although had not really looked, was this

Whether the allow multi threaded software decoding feature has been there all along I don't know but I do know that this version has become my new player of choice in terms of XBMC use.

Let me make this perfectly clear for you.... I'm using my Sigma8911 based box and I'm planning to test a RK3288 box to see if and when it matches or surpasses the Video and Audio quality I now have.
As far as champion you are mistaken... I don't expect all this to happen in the next 3 months... or even who is gonna be first Android or Ubuntu...

What I do know is that when that happens these $95 boxes will surpass the Pi as a mediaplayer on all fronts.

Yes, *if* and *when* but not *now* which is the period I'm talking about. Notice I used the term "stopgap" in my previous post which should have tipped you off.

I'm sure the Rockchip will be fine at some yet to be determined point in the future, but does everyone who is buying one of these products know that they will be nothing more than Alpha testers?

Exactly.... CloudMedia/Syabas/Willem55(Willem53) need alpha and beta testers as this is their modus operandi. They release excellent hardware and buggy software... It takes *forever* to finally iron out all the bugs. This formulae has worked for them in the past and they see it as a viable option.

Is buying a known quantity with great support and superb video playback abilities, along with built in CEC and 3d switching.

Multi-threaded software decoding is a part of official stable for a while now.

The non-compliant xbmc plays 4K HEVC with ease. I posted a video showing it.

1080p, same on QPRO.
