Probably a ways off, but it looks like they found a way to hack the PS3 with Linux again:

I have heard before that developers didnt want to go back to consoles but the new hacks that exposed private keys for the ps3 make things interesting. I cant recall a console private key ever being found before.

It wouldnt require hacks to install and use because we can sign things ourselves. I just find this very exciting because the potential install base is in the millions and packaged correctly could be user friendly to install.

Hopefully the open sdks advance enough to support the hardware graphics accelleration. the idea of having to compile with leaked sdks is unsavory. i personally think native game os type homebrew would superior to a linux based solution but of course would require much more work.

anyway I am curious if any devs are interested in the ps3 as a viable platform now that essentially the keys to the kingdom have been found?

XBMC for PS3? - sanitarium09 - 2011-01-04

As many are no doubt aware by now, the PS3 has been completely compromised with the root key being made available to the public and no way for Sony to patch it without breaking all games/software currently available. So with that, what are the chances of a PS3 port of XBMC in the future? I think the system would the ultimate solution for XBMC with an install base in the millions and the low cost of very powerful hardware.

They say it will probably never happen... - b4nd0ler0 - 2011-01-04

I'd love too to see XBMC on the PS3 but I gather it's unlikely that it'll ever happen mostly due to the lack of Linux drivers for the GPU.

No

We will not see XBMC on the PS3, its too hard and no one from the XBMC team is really interested, this is clear. What is also clear is that the PS3 will definitely become the modders/homebrew console of choice.

The modded xbox launched XBMC and took it from simple homebrew to massive cult following. I think this is because it was a great application and it allowed the console to be the 1 machine that did everything. I have a feeling that if possible people would still want one machine to do everything.

The new media centre which becomes standard on the new permanantly compromised PS3 will become a massive application, there is no doubt in my mind. Exciting times for PS3 owners.

It's not too hard, it's just not worth the effort. Team XBMC is not interested as you mention (and as they have explained repeatedly in this thread and others) because closed platforms ultimately have limited lifetimes and uncertain legal implications.
I think you correctly predict that the homebrew scene on PS3 will explode with the recent security breach. I'm sure someone will port Linux to it natively, and maybe even get some GPU drivers written. XBMC might even get ported by some PS3 hackers, and the patches might even be accepted by Team XBMC (I'm not sure of their policy on this). However, what you will not see is Team XBMC expending their own energy and time to accomplish any of this - they have no motivation to, so lets stop asking them.
Nobody here is against the idea of XBMC on PS3, it's just that nobody here has any motivation to do it. Linux (and Windows) based PC's are a much better platform to work with, and have a much longer lifetime.

Open soruce Linux Nvidia drivers exist:

http://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/

The problem is that:

1. The drivers lack ANY GPU acceleration.

2. The PS3 GPU hardware lacks ANY GPU acceleration.

So in order to make 1080p work in XBMC on the PS3, you need a SPU X driver. Once you have sit down and made one of those, porting XBMC over would be a cakewalk.

I think you're missing the fact that the PS3 does not have a x86 CPU.

:confused2: So what? The code builds on PowerPC based machines, like the G4 based Macs. The blocking factor is not the CPU on the PS3 but getting a working build of Linux with reasonable access to the GPU.

XBMC for PS3 all the way, lets have it Wink

XBMC is PowerPC compatible ? Great news ! Big Grin

I guess one option would be if you could get X working well enough to actually display the XBMC interface is to try to use this Mplayer as an external player:

That would give you 1080p support.
