Why XBMC for PS3, Wii, Xbox360, or any Sigma box like PCH will probably never happen!

this has feck all to do with development. *grump*

also it has been answered a gazillion times; not by us.

apologies then...!

fair enough,
but,

from what ive read so far it maybe possible to access aspects of the PS3 which were not possible to use prior eg graphics chip .....

politely i ask if there is any one out there willing to try and where would be a good place to start?

ps3mc?

the poster has a point the things holding back a port of xbmc before are no longer an issue. It is not being accessed through linux of the other os option, the newest exploits have access to all of the ps3 hardware from the XMB. SO no longer hindered by not being able to access the video hardware and the ram it may be a possibility now.

Since the xbox build was separated from mainline XBMC, the devs have had a policy of not developing XBMC for consoles.

They have said that they would be glad to help a serious and competent programmer to make it happen, but aren't interested in doing it themselves.

The reasoning behind this is the cat-and-mouse game that you get with 'closed' hardware.

We install our homebrew on the PS3, Sony patches the exploit, we exploit again, etc...

The basic philosophy is, if Sony/Nintendo/MS don't want to open their platforms, screw them...

Again, if you or someone you know has the chops to make this happen, team XBMC has said they'd help out in any way they can.

I think what causes the confusion is that XBMC started on the Xbox, which makes people think its console friendly.

What outsiders don't know is that the Xbox was chosen because of the value of hardware at that earlier time.

Nowadays for XBMC the best hardware value is in ION boxes, which is why the Xbox development has ended.

Even if the PS3 has a hack that allows access to the GPU, it doesn't help. You can't run the Nvidia display drivers in PowerPC Linux. The open source drivers for Nvidia aren't good enough yet for XBMC use, so we are back at square one.

The PS3 will never be a decent XBMC box, and that is no big deal. We have Revos people, buy one and be happy....

Aside from the things already mentioned by the others, the possibility has been removed by sony anyway with the latest 3.42 fw update.

...which is exactly why they don't want to support this platform.

@PoofyHairGuy, You're absolutely right, with one exception:

I think that the point is that lots of folks already have PS3s, Wiis, 360s, NMTs, PCHs, etc...

If we could support these boxes, it would mean that people could run XBMC on a great platform without having to buy anything.

theres already a few homebrews been made for it. wont be long before something like XBMC is avaiable if not an out and out port.

Simple solution you do not go online. And if you haven't made it to 3.41 yet maunally update by file.
