I honestly don't see a point when video rendering in vmware is below average at best (*due to no hardware acceleration)
Anybody seriously wanting to dev really needs to make a proper linux install

I'm not sure what the real demand is for the VM. Is it still helpful on basic issues, or has the port gotten past the stage where the VM helps?

If there is demand for an updated version, I can create one this weekend.

Just let me know.

I'd be interested in seeing a new VMWare image. I tried downloading the one on Linux Appliances, and it just got stuck at 80%.

I think the VMWare image is a useful snapshot of where development is currently at on the linux port - and it's useful for people like me who are curious about it, but don't have the time/hardware/linux knowledge to set it all up and get/build the latest code.

As for graphics acceleration -- forgive my ignorance, but I thought VMWare had at least some hardware acceleration if you chose to enable it

Oh, and if you choose to create an image - could you add the date and version number to the filename? xbmcdev.zip doesn't really tell me anything about the version of linux, or the snapshot date when I'm looking for the file Smile

A couple of clarities here. The VMware image does not include the XBMC code, only the pre-req packages to make it somewhat easier. You'll still need to download the code and compile it.

The hardware acceleration only works for Windows guests, not Linux guests. There is no solution I have seen for Linux.

The http://www.aceshome.com/xbmcdev.zip link is not working. Anyone know where can i found it?

Refresh Problems - arormoser - 2007-12-14

I installed XboxMediaCenter in the VMWare image. I have no problems in the installation but when i start the XBMC, my screen keeps refreshing every second. I modified the .VMX to enable 3d and increise VGA memory, but the problem persists.

Any ideas?

Thanks, AR

AFAIK, you can't enable 3d on Linux guests.

Functionality Limitations of running in VMware? - Livin - 2008-01-01

Just wondering what Functionality Limitations people are seeing if running in a VM? Is the graphics rendering or such hampered, etc?

I'm looking at running XBMC in a Linux VM on my Vista (4GB ram, C2D) machine.

thanks for the info!

vmware has no 3d accelleration at all in the guest OS so yes xbmc will most likely suck hard in software mode

The 3D acceleration I already knew about but I'm was asking about any rendering limitations... e.g. graphics that would not be supported per hardware issues/compatibility and other things... like support for connected devices via USB, COM, LPT... thus the "etc".

btw... my understanding is that VMware is working on 3D accel. Fusion has experimental support.

People are so quick to jump down someone's throat and give bad rep Huh

Only for Microsoft Windows (Win32) opersting-systems, not Linux. This has been discusses earlier in this very topic thread.

Looks like linuxtracker recreated their site, so I just recreated the torrent...
