xbmc does wonderful things with audio, video, and pictures, but one form of media has been left out...the written word. it would be great for people with weak eyesight to be able to read downloaded books, newpapers and mags on our large tv screens. while i'm dreaming i might as well mention "text to speech" ....wow. i use isilo on my computer, if something like this could be used on the xbox........

keep up the great work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i don't think the tv has sufficient resolution to get good text output (unless you have a hugeass hdtv). you'd be looking at maybe 20-30 words per screen to keep it readable which is likely to be too much scrolling to make it useful.

i don't think text to speech is likely to happen either.

how about if you had a projector? Smile

see above comments on hdtv for projectors.

there is no open source pdf viewer that is readily available.

maybe convert pdf pages to pics with ghostview?

- DarkVamp - 2004-04-29

hi,

good idea... lets do this "on the fly" with xbmc...
i'll look into this.

- Butcher - 2004-04-29

how are you planning to run ghostview on the xbox? Image

- nanite1000 - 2004-04-30

i think if somebody really need to read pdf on xbmc. they can easily do some small batch to convert pdf to pics on pc.

darkvamp if u are looking for some coding that helps to this situation too. improve the zooming + panning speed/functionality (maybe like in dvdx2).
there is already one submitted patch to my pics that isnt included in cvs, maybe start from that.

is it possible to add pdf reading ability to media center? it might be a good thing since many ebooks are in pdf format. what better way of reading ebooks than being in bed or a couch... way better than reading it on your monitors....

is it worth it?

regards,
chris

i think it would be great if xbmc supported viewing .pdf files. i have a huge collection of xbox game manuals that are in pdf format and i would love to be able to read them on my xbox. what do you guys think? there is an open source pdf reader called xpdf. their website is here:

http://www.foolabs.com/xpdf/

i believe it is written in c++ which should make it fairly possible.
let me know what you all think
