I am certainly far from an expert as I'm just spec'ing my machine now.

It all depends upon what you want to do. That setup seems like it would do SD, and possibly 720p, but I don;t think it'll handle 1080I or 1080P.

I'd have gone with a little more processing power, maybe an E6600 or something similar. I don't know if the onboard video will do any 1080 HiDef stuff. Anyone here have experience with the GeForce 7150? I'd spring for a low cost, fanless, Nvidia 8500/8600.

The 2.4ghz chip can often be clocked North of 3ghz. I am running a 2.7gig chip and thus far have yet to see a skip burp or stumble - but have also not yet found this infamous MKV file :-( I'de jave bought a 2.4ghz chip if it wasn't MORE expensive at NewEgg than the chip I did choose - which if needed will also clock North of 3ghz.

The onboard video WILL support 1080P just fine so long as it supports the proper revision of OpenGL and shader. Since, for the one millionth time, the decoding is being done via SOFTWARE aka the CPU and not hardware like it would be on Windows the video card makes much less difference for us. The 7K series GeForce was one of the series that was stated, earlier in this thread, to work and I think you can even go further back but you want to have at least an AGP bus not PCI. That board looks pretty good to me!

Let's just say I had the 7050 onboard and it did not cut it for fullscreen and 1080p.

I then bought an MSI 8600GT fanless and that works beautifully.

I'm not sure if i understand You correctly ( english is not my native language Wink ).
Onboard 7050 DID worked without any problems decoding 1080p ? Was it something like x264 mkv ?

Why? I thought the GPU didn't really matter.

My XBMC machine has a nforce 630i with a 7150 video (essentially the same thing) and it plays HD just fine using the 169 beta nv binary drivers. I'm running an E4500 overclocked to 3Ghz, though.

No, he's saying that the onboard 7050 did NOT work ("cutting it" is Americar slang for working).

Not sure why the 7050 didn't work well. My native resolution of TV is 1920x1080. The XBMC UI was very slow with the 7050. Playing videos was okay actually, but with the 8600 GT, everything is just peachy Smile

It's a DX9 chipset supporting Shader 3 and likely at LEAST OGL1.5 if not 2. Having a hard time confirming what level of OpenGL but it's at least 1.5. The 7150 chipset is listed as PCIe only too so internally on that board that's what I'd expect.

Honestly I don't think popping $70 on a video card is too much to ask but certainly cheaper is better and if a MoBo has HDMI too then all the better. Sounds like maybe more testing needs tobe done?

Oh, the 7150 vs the 7050 - the graphics clock is 120mhz faster. Perhaps that will help some?

My TV is 1080p as well, and XBMC works fine with the onboard video.

I guess the 7150 is a bit faster than the 7050, and I have my board overclocked. Since it's onboard, the video is thus also overclocked, from the native 200Mhz (on a E4500) to 266Mhz.

Sure, all you need is a 2.4Ghz C2D. But that barebones only takes laptop (socket M) CPUs, so the CPU alone will run you $642. If you don't care about 1080p, you can pick up a 1.83Ghz CPU for $243. You pay for that nice form factor. Through the nose.
