does a pentium d925 run 1080p HD material? Or does it only run 720p and 1080i?

- gzusrawx - 2008-01-09

It may run some 1080p movies but not much. I mainly got it because it was $50 and I don't have an hdtv yet.

Could You check this sample and tell us if it plays smooth ?

It is the infamous a-lot-o-birds-flying scene from 1080p BBC documentary (35Mbps)

As soon as I get it up and running, currently I have been trying to get windows installed on a PATA drive in order to update the bios (they only have a windows based flashing program on their site). Having problems getting it to install on a pata drive on this motherboard still haven't figured out what's going on. it finishes the setup and then after reboot acts as if it was never installed. It's like it's never properly writing to the drive.

pain in the butt hope I don't have a defective motherboard. Rodalpho you have this mother board, have you seen any issues with the pata ide buss.

- gzusrawx - 2008-01-09

I do have ubuntu64 installed on another drive so I know the sata buss works fine.

Embrion, thanks for the clip! I have that coming down now! I have the ASUS G35 based HDMI board on the way now and it looks like a D-vineo case here soon. Be sometime next week before it goes together I expect but I'll have results from that as soon as it's screwed together. I may use a laptop drive for it as well, ought to be pretty slick.

No problems with the PATA. I installed vista home premium on an ancient 80GB PATA drive with the NF77.

Okay, I can report that the "birds" clip drags my machine down to about 14FPSShocked Yeah, that is indeed a killer. Both I and a friend of mine tried it on Windows workstations and it pretty much choked where XBMC at least played it throughEek

How likely are we to be running into content like this? That's pretty intense to say the least! Is anyone able to play it smoothly at 24FPS and if so what configuration are you using?!

CPU total 100% w/XBMC at 102%. Sound stutters on and off, it is remotely possible my NAS isn't keeping up but I'd be very surprised. I'm tempted to overclock in order to see what difference that might make. Oh and figured out how to see additional stats - dropping frames like a mutha' on 'birds! But not so much on Matrix although I did see it buffer once.

This looks like an excellent clip to beat the crap out of machines as a testLaugh

Dang, The bird scene from planet earth was resource demanding Smile
about 12 fps Smile

C2D 1.8ghz nothing fancy. Many other 1080p clips works good but NOT this one Smile

C2D 2.6ghzHuh?

I know youve probably stated what cpu you have before but it makes it hard to read and follow when you post performance info without specs.

KMPlayer + CoreAVC (pure software @ both cores) +Win XP:
Done some testes also with OC and downclocked GPU Core and Mems
Sample plays with: E6300 [email protected] (downclocked it from stable 2.8GHzt)

CPU usage peak at 93% with ATI Radeon X1900GT 256bit 256MB DDR3 @ little OC 560 / 765
CPU usage peak at 96%-97% with ATI Radeon X1900GT 256bit 256MB DDR3 @ 155 / 198 (lowered Core and Mems to emulate worse card)

So as You can see there is very low impact of GPU just like it was stated before and You should be safe with Dual Core (Intel's C2d or

Pentium Dual Core) at something like 2.4-2.6GHz. It's easy to get 2.8-3.0 with E2140 if You got some decent Mobo.
Later I'll try to check out latest XBMC if I manage to get my Ubuntu working with Radeon again.

Oh, I can say my specs

GPU : Nvidia Geforce 8800GTS 640mb
Mem: 2 gb ddr2 800
CPU : Intel Core 2 Duo 1.8ghz

Elephants dream works wonders at 1080p
The bird scene from Planet Earth: From pole to pole. Does seem to go around 12fps.

I'll clock up my CPU and see if I can get it smooth. But this seems redicously slow. Even for high bitrate content. Smile

- pike - 2008-01-11

I'd say (without much experience) that if a RIG handles that Planet Earth "bird scene" without dropping frames it's OK for 1080p x264 playback.

Maybe we should make it a 1080p x264 reference clip ?

My linux pc doesn't handle it Smile
Intel GM965
Intel C2D 2.2Ghz
1GB DDR2 800Mhz

Btw AFAIK, *ONLY* "hw acceleration" to speak of that we do today is CSC (Color Space Conversion) which is offloaded onto shaders if hardware supports it (I know Intel, Nvidia does and probably ATI aswell)

Yah, mentioned it a few times. 2.66Ghz C2d, fanless MSI NVIDIA 8500GT, one of the ASUS P5 boards, 2Gig memory. I'm about to move to a mATX board that has the Intel G3500 video chipset w/HDMI onboard. We'll see if that's any different. I'll try overclocking it as-is first just to see if I can get it to smooth out, probably tomorrow. I've watched lots of other stuff without issue including quite a few Apple trailers - no issues.

This is a demanding clip, is it representative of 1080P content anyone is likely to run into in the "wild"? It's an HD-DVD clip yes? The Matrix clip, any ideas on how representative that is? We cannot decode the sound now, is that likely to be common?
