I've been running PlayOn through XP on VMware. It works pretty well, but I'm not quite willing to shell out $40 for it. If it were ported to Linux, or if it could work well enough through WINE, I'd buy it immediately. I tried Boxee's new RSS-based Hulu support, but I hate that it only has recent videos, so I'm sticking with XBMC.

If you want to use a VM to run Playon, use VMware since Virtualbox, at least for me, only used one CPU so Hulu kept choking with it on my 2.5ghz C2D. VMware server keeps up ok.

I made a few changes on my settings a while back when testing alot of plugins on my xbox. I increased video cache to 4096 (or close ). I also went into event server and increased time (close to 2000) since some Hulu connects would fail.
Everything seems to work great now. I have read it does depend on your PCs power and hdd space. It stated on the REV3 plugin that it needed middle to highend pc.
My specs
athlon 2.4 duo core
4 gigs ram
15 gigs of space on OD drive
6 mb internet connection

hmm...I'm not sure how to increase the event server to 2000 on XP or xbox? Can you provide instructions?
I have my cache settings to their highest levels for everything in xbmc.
If I can get the synch problem solved, and Hulu from dropping the video after 10minutes, I'm sold.

My specs:
intel 2.8 Dual Core
4.5gigs ram
120 gigs of HD space
N rounter and N wireless bridge

You make adjustment in xbmc on xbox. Here is info from link on mediamail..
This was Posted by drsedlis on Thu, 03/05/2009 - 20:26.

so your hulu hangs after you start to cache a video file and then you get something along the lines of aborted playback, too many dropped files or something like that.

the problem is in your xbox settings, specifically go to
Network Preferences

then

Event Server

go to "Continuous Repeat Delay (ms)" which is probably set at some unbelievably low number (mine was 25 ms). Crank this number up to something in the thousands (i have mine at 9825 or 9.825 seconds, which is probably way high, but hey)

Then go back and try to watch again.

I also found I had more success when i was watching in 480p (v. 720p)

I think the problem is that XBMC gets too impatient with the hulu connection and thinks the connection is dead (prematurely)

I made mine 2000 whihc seems to be fine atm.

The drop after 10 mins is a problem other shave had on playon... Let me look on foums I think its a firewall issue if i remember posts.
Let you know if i find something.

Edit.. Ive looked and only real posts were those of FW issues. You might log on and post your issue and see what the staff suggests. My gut says look to fw or router since you connect but stops after 10 mins. Ive been watchin shows the last 2 days with little issue.

so the shows don't drop anymore since I changed the event server (thanks for the info).
The delay is better, but it's about a half a second and it's annoying. I'll keep tweaking the settings on playon, I know they suggested maybe go to medium instead of max or auto. I'll try that to see how it works.

Hulu works for me with PlayOn, with no special tweaks. - zebraitis - 2009-05-02 16:28

All,

I have already listed my results with Netflix.

The group seems interested in PlayOn with Hulu, so here are my results.

1) Went to Hulu, created a user name and password.

2) Went to my PlayOn server, and made sure to enter my user name and password for Hulu in the PlayOn server application.

3) Powered up the XBMC. made NO CHANGES to memory cache settings

4) Seleceted my PlayOn client

5) Selected Hulu. Lots of different menu choices... Nice!

6) Decided to watch a morally uplifting film, chose "Bad Girs From Mars".

7) Up pops the connection message, stating that my Cache is set for 256K and other assorted stuff.

... But the movie does not start.

... Hey! This has happened before in Netflix. I know...

8) I wait 20 seconds and select the same film again.

9) It starts to play.

So, after 15 minutes of trouble free playing, I check the info about the film.

Video is doing 30 frames per second, 5 dropped frames. Cache is at about 80%.

So, I don't understand what the problem is that most folks are having.

I decided to change flicks... selected "Cheech and Chongs Next Movie". Started playing right away.

I guess your results may vary.

V.

Ah, NetFlix, i bumped onto it no so long ago. I thought, hey cool, here's a way to see Atlantis Season 5.
I tried to register, can't pass the capatcha. I finally learned that the reason behind this is my not being in the us.

Hulu at leat have the decency for writting that clearly. We see tv shows one year leater (and that's the best case senario), have overpriced dvd. And they goes Shocked when peaple downloads.

- DrkRavenBrow - 2009-05-03 21:17

ok I tried it on medium and I still get the lag in audio. I'm thinking it has more to do with the xbox processing power then playon. I also noticed a lag with *.avi files on put on the HD of the xbox and played them. Does anyone else have this problem? do you know to fix it?

- mbstrlbstr - 2009-05-04 13:13

So . . . I increased my event server to something like 9000 or whatever, and now I've got a computer that runs playon and hardwired networked. I've also disabled a quirky adblocking script I had running on my router. Sometimes it blocked hulu sometimes not.
Now it works! Not only netflix, but hulu too. Last night my wife and I watched Family Guy and some other shows. I still have to click the show, wait for it to "cache" and fail, then wait 10 secs and click again. After that it pretty much runs perfectly.

- Karnage - 2009-06-06 19:11

Error: playback aborted to many consecutive failed items.

So I'm having the same problem as a lot of other people it seems but none of the fixes they use have worked for me. Using the latest xbmc build xbox hardwired to router computer connected via wireless using playon. I can watch NBC universal stuff all day but no luck with any playon stuff same for youtube and apple movie trailers. I'm fixing to sling my xbox through a window. Only have one week left on playon free trial so i would like to get it working so i can know whether or not to buy playon
Any help is much appreciated
