By default, the AppleTV OS will refuse to recognize any USB device. There is a whitelist inside the mach_kernel that does this. There are AppleTV patches that patch around the whitelist. See http://wiki.awkwardtv.org/wiki/Main_Page and their forums for more information.

There is a future plan to have atvusb-creator handle this mach_kernel patching to enable USB device support but I don't want to go there yet.

how to: point xbmc to my usb hdd - staka69 - 2008-10-05

I ran this command:

-bash-2.05b$ diskutil list
/dev/disk0
#: type name size identifier
0: GUID_partition_scheme *37.3 GB disk0
1: EFI 34.0 MB disk0s1
2: Apple_Recovery 400.0 MB disk0s2
3: Apple_HFS OSBoot 900.0 MB disk0s3
4: Apple_HFS Media 35.8 GB disk0s4
/dev/disk1
#: type name size identifier
0: FDisk_partition_scheme *465.8 GB disk1
1: Windows_NTFS 465.8 GB disk1s1

so, now how do I point xbmc to see the external drive/ /dev/disk1?

Thanks,

Mike

If you do the USB patch and have the required kext and frameworks, it looks just like an OSX box with USB storage.

As I've said before, questions about enabling USB storage are better answered on the the AppleTV specific forums at ;
