Ashlar!

What refreshrate you are running your XBMC GUI? I ask because I noticed a strange thing. I used to run XBMC GUI at 50Hz. Running 24fps movie caused switching to 24Hz for me and playback was smooth. But running PAL movie made no refreshrate switch and wasn't smooth at all!! I struggled but had an akward idea. I switched my XBMC GUI to 60Hz (I have almost no NTSC material) and tried playing PAL and 24fps. And guess what. It seems that after switching refresh rate (at least for me) the playback is smooth. Without refreshrate change the playback stutters even if refreshrate matches the fps of the movie. So for me the key point was to change refreshrate - after change is made everything is smooth.

I was thinking if you have your GUI set to 48Hz, maybe that's causes jerkiness even tho refreshrate matches movie fps...

I was waiting for Jester to post an updated external player build. I'll try tonight.

dpassent, what you are suggesting is to keep the GUI at 60Hz allowing XBMC to switch to either 48Hz or 50Hz automatically? Is that what you are doing now? When you go back to the GUI it switches back to 60Hz?

- dpassent - 2009-01-19

yep... exactly... switching to another refreshrate was a key to smoothness in my case... the switch has to be made to make playback smooth.

I have my GUI in 60hz also and switching to 50hz for PAL and 24hz for 24p works fine.

My only wish now (related to this) is a setting to make it switch to 23.98hz for 24p which is a better match. I hope they respond to the ticket Smile

Related question to the auto refresh thing...

I am going for a projector and a scaler, which I will hook up to my computer. Having an external scaler I don't want to have any scaling whatsoever done by the computer, so XBMC needs to output at the movie's native resolution.
I.e if it's a DVD @ 480p (NTSC) or 576p (PAL) and so on.

Is it possible to have the resolution switched automatically as well, based on content? I can run any XBMC version required (Live, Windows, Linux).

Thank you.

It's been mentioned before (http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?p=254938&highlight=scaler#post254938) but you'd have to request it in the Trac.

- phunqe - 2009-01-26

Thanks.

I was searching the Trac just now and I found two cases that seems to indicate you can have at least different resolutions for UI and video playback?

http://trac.xbmc.org/changeset/15458
http://trac.xbmc.org/ticket/4812

Although I can't see where you would set this?

Settings->Appearance->Screen
Settings->Video->Player

Note that it's not autoswitching.

OK, I'm experiencing some strange behaviour with refresh rate autoswitching.

When I set the desktop resolution to 1920*1080@24Hz and the same as screen resolution in XBMC, I get smooth 24p playback in XBMC with 24p sources, so I'm sure my system can handle 24p playback.

If I set the desktop resolution to 1920*1080@60Hz (or 50Hz) and the same screen resolution in XBMC and then play a 24p movie, XBMC attempts to adjust the frame rate, but while doing so also does some weird rescaling and translating (to the upper left corner) on the image. See this screen shot for an example.

I also tried setting the screen resolution in XBMC to auto with the same results.

Anyone got an idea on how to solve this?

My system:
Vista SP1 32 bit
nVidia 9600GT with 181.22 display driver

@RickDeckard
Go to "settings-appearancce-screen-video calibration" and adjust your screen.
Do this for all refresh rates in your native resolution and you will be fine. Nod

And check the subtitle position while you're at it because it seems to default below the screen for some resolutions.

- RickDeckard - 2009-01-29

@Allfodr and Hitcher
thanks for the suggestion, but that wasn't it unfortunately.

Upon further investigation I have found that the auto adjustment functionality sets the refresh rate to 23.98 Hz.
The strange thing is that when I set the desktop resolution to 23.98Hz and the screen resolution in XBMC to auto or 1920*[email protected], 24p movies are shown without the resizing and translation issue I reported above.

When the desktop resolution and screen resolution in XBMC is set to 1920*1080 at a refresh rate higher than 23.98Hz, the auto refresh rate adjustment function correctly sets the resolution to 1920*[email protected] but then I do get the display problems mentioned in my previous post. Even though it all works fine if I set the exact same resolution manually Huh

There is one other thing I have noticed which may be related: in XBMC, I can only select the exact same refresh rate to which I have set the Vista desktop. E.g. if I set my Vista resolution to 1920*1080@60Hz, I can only select 1920*1080@60Hz in XBMC. At least as far as 1920*1080 resolution is concerned. For lower resolutions I can select the same complete range as reported under Windows.

I have 24hz as default on my computer and when I play 50hz-material in xbmc my projector goes black for 2-4 seconds as if it´s changing refresh rate, but when it´s comes on again it's the same refresh rate as before.
And the weird thing is that ati catalyst has been set to 50hz by xbmc, but my projectors info says it's getting an 24hz signal.
I know it's not the projectors info that's wrong because when I manually set the refresh rate in ati catalyst the projector gets the correct signal. And I can also see on the 50hz material that the refresh rate not been changed.
What could be the problem?
I have the 17558 jester-build.
